Hi Russ Glen,
Congrats on getting the Rhythm Traveler!!

For your info n I'm sure u notice that the RT tomes have no resonant heads mounted so that will cause significant ringing.

To reduce the ringing, get those plastic O-rings identical to ur sizes. That wld somehow 85% works.

Those RTs are made to prioritize Silent Practice and that's why it comes along with mesh heads.

hi RussGlen.

i own a pacific chameleon set which is around the same specifications as yours, however, i do have the privilege of having lugs on the other side so that i can attach a resonant skin, which definitely helps improve the sound. i have been using the stock drumskins (1 side meshed, the other is clear pdp muffled skins that are thin like Remo Diplomats). so i basically switch the tom over if i want silent practice.

are you using the stock drumskins for your RT? i guess the best way to improve the sound is to change those drumheads and of course, experiment with the sound produced with different skins.

recently i changed the drumskins of my drums to Coated Remo Emperors and used my old clear pdp skin with some sort of muffling as the resonant head, well i am poor so i couldn't afford new resonant skins, and the mesh heads are pretty much thrown to a corner to rot. i have to say the sound has indeed improved, and i am happy, but still not quite, as i have yet to achieved the tone of a power tom which i so desperately desire.

anyway, a question to all the pro drummers out there.. whats the best way to tune a tom such that it sound really deep and powerful, even though its shell is shallow (i.e. a 12X6" tom)? i have been experimenting many ways of tuning, and changing the skins make it sound slightly better due to the shallowness of the drum shells.

here's a review of my set, which is a RT clone to some extent maybe it would help: http://www.mikedolbear.co.uk/story.asp?StoryID=88&Source=Archive&txtSearch=

RussGlenn: you should definitely change your skins (probably those coated ones, maybe an Emperor X as those can help muffle those weird ringings you are experiencing) and i guess proper tuning would be the key to having great sounding drums, and also you have to know what kind of tone you wish to achieve. All of these will factor in to a sound you love.

-Excessive ringing on toms
Actually, with the the proper tuning approach, you can cut down on the ringing quite a bit. Of course, I add a little bit of DIY dampening (personally see no point in O-rings, that's just personal) in the form of duct tape + a small piece of cloth on the underside of the head.

That's the advantage of RT toms, you can adjust the dampening from the underside of the head as you like since there's only one head!

Head choice - If you're on a budget and still using the stock heads, then you can do your best to tune and dampen them. But generally clear heads are on the brighter side with natural overtones.

Otherwise, a set of coated heads can give you a warmer tone on the RT, minimizing some of the high frequency tones.

Could look at these recommendations from the DTB:

* Category 2 – A more mellow tone compared to single ply with overtones becoming less prevalent on the initial attack, stick feel and sustain are reduced slightly; A sound similar to placing an “O” ring around the head. Comprised of either single and 2-ply muffled or heavy weight heads, these can help warm up or round out the tone, yet retain an element of sustain with minimal high-pitched overtones. This would include heads such as the

o REMO Emperor™ (2-7mil plies)
o REMO PowerStroke3™ - Single ply feel – minimized overtones
o REMO FiberSkyn™ F1 – Warm and open – minimal overtones
o Evans G2™ - Slightly muted over Evans G1™, open sound tuned high.
o Aquarian Studio-X Series™ - Warm overtones, single head feel
o Aquarian Double Thin™ - slightly more responsive and open than Response 2™
o Aquarian Response 2™ - Focused sustain strong attack

-Rather high / excessive ringing of bass drum
I'm personally using this tip from the DTB, like the result best.
I'm using an Evans EQ4 batter (it's a clear head with built in muffling ring on the inside) medium tight and the stock pearl reso medium loose (not loose in the real sense but just lightly tightened)

One pad or pillow, 15-20% coverage against Batter head and Resonant: Beater attack accentuated, overall volume diminished a bit, tone and sustain become focused, overtones diminished.

From tips on tuning and how to squeeze out the best possible tones from whatever heads you have, check out the Drum Tuning Bible: http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/

P.S. I'm no pro, still got much to learn. Enjoy your RT!
Where are you located? I'm sure most of the brothers here won't mind helping a fellow drummer out. Singapore's so small. Wherever you are, there's bound to be someone nearby

lol i'm planning on changing all my heads..
most prolly getting coated ambassadors on my 10" and 12" and coated emperor on my 14" toms.

gonna read up the DTB and hope to learn more.

btw i'm living at bukit panjang so ya.

hey im a RT as well and i have the exact problems man. my tom heads a the remo weatherking ebony pinstripes. apparently theyre good heads but the sound it produces on the rt is pretty high tone which doesnt sound anything like a tom ah. i bought those moongels which did muff the sound a little, removes the super ring effect but the sounds still not the desired one.

mmm if really coated ones are a good option i dont mind investing in them somewhat. (wonders how much $$$).

kinda regret getting my drumset w/o really having the feel of being played in my room. gotta get a new set of cymbals and now heads i supposed, damn, such drum lessons are expensive ah.
