Mikemann's journal:
RGS gig was up to expectation, as previous experience with all girl school were energy and passion filled audience (CHIJ Toa Payoh).
It was a wet morning, with heavy downpour the previous day and night. A 2nd early bird session to begin at 9am, most of time was a noon session. I got outta bed about 6:35am after snoozing a little. Got in my van at 7sharp to try to setoff, amidst heavy drizzling rain.
Reached Balmoral road, where the entire stretch is already jammed by parent cars bringing their girls to school, which lasted about 15mins. Entered the school grounds and reccee a ideal spot to unload. James was already there, waved at me at the main lobby. Parked just beside the canteen, we began to unload as the hall was just above.
By 7:35 the rest of the band arrived and helped carried all the audio and musical equipment up to the hall. Setup followed was a quick affair as the band and me had done numbers of gig already. No sound check was done whatsoever, due to ongoing event in the hall, everything was done behind the curtain. The RGS girls already filled the hall while we were setting up, even Soowei and Jeremy from Power98 were caught off guard by the early turnup.
James was a great help with the logistics, helping the setup alongside with the bands. And not a moment too soon, as we finished and hand over the mics to Power98 for their presentation. During which a little breather time, we proceed down to have breakfast. The 30mins felt like 5mins, and I proceeded up to wait for Power98 to finish, with James at back roll seats.
Soon the last goodies bags were given out and I handed my trusty cheapo snapshot cam to James to capture some action. WGB & Ronin was already lined up behind the stage, and the 2 bands did a chop chop sound check before WGB started off the set.
WGB emo rock set instantly took to the RGS girls, cheering and waving to the music. Although time was short, due to recess time approaching, WGB put up a great performance and they did a full set. Their set was a bit easier to mix, mainly controlling the vocal parts, and some guitar timings during the non singing cues. By now the RGS girls were already all high and charged up.
When Ronin came onto the stage, the power and energy from both band and audience had reached a climax. I was like a ant on a hot stove, making sure the settings are properly re-equalized to Ronin's levels. All fell into place and I was mixing into their cues at their first number. Knowing their songs was an advantage as there were many guitar solos and vocals to cue in properly. The enthuiastic energy from the RGS girls was sometimes overpowering, really like a major concert.
The gig was done about before 11am, and both bands were mobbed at the corridors afterthat. At the same time, we started to packup as usual and item by item, tallied and brought down to the vehicle. WGB and Ronin did a short interview with Sabrina and team from RGS. And that's a wrap for the day. I left the school compound at about 12 noon.
It's a wildly sucessful gig for both bands at RGS. The next leg will begin near the end of the month. So if your school isn't on the list yet, go do something about it.
NB. Thanks again, James.
