Replacing pups on a 72 Thinline RI

the 72 thinline RI, is the dual humbucker guitar with 2 fender wide-range humbuckers.

I was wondering if these are standard sized humbuckers, because I would like to change them out for replacement humbuckers with different character.

Also wondering if the Suhr S-90 P90 fits into humbucker slots.

the fender wide range humbuckers on the 72RI thinline are not the same size as standard humbuckers. they are longer and thinner.

if the pickup cavities do not accept standard humbuckers, you may have to route the body.

at the very least you'll have change the pickguard to a customized pickguard that accepts standard humbuckers.

www.chandlerguitars.com can make one for you. or you can try asking one of the local shops at excelsior hotel if they can route a custom pickguard for you.

otherwise, you can find a way to just cram/force the standard humbuckers in, but it won't be pretty.

*edit: i think P90s -might- fit in the cavities with a customized pickguard*

hope this helps

one thing about buying fenders with wide range humbuckers is that you've gotta like the sound enough not to swap pickups.

i will be shipping from ishibashi next week.
Which would be a better option, the MIM or the MIJ in terms of the sound and feel.

the mim one comes with alnico magnet wide range humbuckers - more authentic, warmer vintage sound.

the mij one comes with ceramic magnet wide range humbuckers - more generic, slightly harsher sound.

otherwise, they sound pretty similar.

you can order the replacement alnico wide range humbuckers online from a good US fender dealer if you are picky.

i got this info from www.fenderforum.com in the past when i used to own an mij one.

the mij one has better QC & craftsmanship imo. better resale value too.

otherwise the woods are the same. feel is very similar.

not an easy decision huh? :P

I'm with edder on this - if you're thinking of changing out the Wide Range humbuckers, maybe the 72 tele is not for you! They're voiced to be growly and raw and they look wicked cool.

The original 70s Seth Lover designed ones with cunife magnets are going for over $400 a pop on ebay.

Standard humbuckers won't fit as the Wide Range humbuckers are larger. Rio Grande is one company that makes aftermarket pickups for the 72 tele. Vintage Tallboy 72 Neck and Muy Grande 72 Bridge - scroll down each page. They're not voiced like the original Wide Range humbuckers apparently, so maybe these might suit you better if you're into something different.

dan, if i were to buy one... it'll be all about the looks! who cares about the sound!!!
