hey i wa just wondering, if i want to record at home, what equipment would i need? i've been reading mags, so do i need mics, wires, and a pre amp? can i have a recording device that records directly from its surroundings? or must i have a cable output to the instrument to record it? im pretty puzzled by all these. do i really need a preamp?

Re: recoring equipment

Instrument > Amp > Mic up > XLR cable > Pre Amp > 1/4 jack (or whatever that fits into your soundcard) cable > Soundcard/PC

if you get a presonus firebox/firepod, the connection's kinda like
Instrument > Amp > Mic up > XLR Cable > Preamp/Soundcard > firewire cable > PC.
where presonus firebox is the "preamp + soundcard combined"

take a look.

oh yeah you don't exactly have to mike everything up, if it's clean guitars or bass can D.I (direct input / line in)

hey what about the bluetube dp?

oh man all that stuff is giving me a headache. i have an electronic drumset. so basically i just connect the wire to the amp and to the bluetube den to the com?

what about keyboards and elec guitars, just connect straight to the blue tube?

well first of all what do you have and what are you trying to do here? don't get a headache yet. cos when it comes to mixing after recording thats when it'll hurt.

bluetube DP is a pre amp. presonus firebox/pod is both a preamp + firewire soundcard. and whats your PC specs? CPU / Ram and hard disk? and what sound card are you using?

> check soundcard
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds And Audio Devices

to access your windows built in mixer for your soundcard =
Start > Run > sndvol32.exe

> in bet. the firebox and keyboard btw?
err midi cables and stuff. that's under arrangement/composition stuff. i'm not a midi guy can't help you from there on.

erm record music jammed with my friends and i. mainly a electric guit, yamaha psr e203 keyboard and an electronic set.

whats your budget? you wanna record as in a demo record or just a rough live jamming playing record?

Demo layering record : [you need : recording soundcard/mics/cables]
record drums first
record guitars following drums
record bass following guitar and drums
record keyboards following guitar,bass,drums
record vocals, following etc.

live jamming recording : [You need : mixer/cables/mics]
one microphone or (since in your case digital drumset) [Drums+guitar+bass+keyboards+singing] record all at once.

hah
don't really go by the book. not reliant on high end equipment. let the final mix sound speak for itself.

anyway josh,

Electric Drums+keyboards > 1/4 jack line in > Mixer
Guitar/Bass amp mic up > XLR cable > Mixer
Vocals mic up (duh) > XLR cable > Mixer
-
Mixer > headphone out (or any other outs) into your soundcard's line in/mic in.
and from there on you'll need a software like audacity
(http://audacity.sourceforge.net) to record. pls take note that your PC will need alot of maintenance.

a mixer that will fit your budget : [= CLICKABLE LINK]
[Yamaha MG-10/2] @ $180

and cheap triple mics :
[Behringer] @ $35USD (about $55SGD)

[Samson] @ $96 SGD promotion at sweelee

or just approach some jamming studio ask if they're selling their beatup mics or something.

if you're going for home layer recording , try [Line6 TonePort UX2] ($300+ i think) not bad.

P.S : do a search on the old past related questions asked in soft forum to learn more alternatives etc. don't just take my word for it.

90¢ worth.

nah... recording what ever instruments first in a recording doesn't really matters. every peoples have different ways to record a piece of music. Is how you get the bands to be comfy on it to perform the way they like. :) cheers mate.
