Hey guys.

As stated in the title.
I'm intending to use it for playing in Church services.
Looking for an overdrive/distortion that is med-high gain, yet smooth and "polite" = Not too jarring.
Important that its fat, smooth and open sounding. Not the fizzy, thin and harsh stuff.
One that sounds good at high volumes too!

This is the kind of sound that i'm trying to describe.

Your halp iz much appreciated (:

The guys at Hillsong United use a good tube amp as a foundation for overdrive, so that's important too. A Jekyll and Hyde Ultimate Overdrive pedal along with a good EQ pedal like the Route 66 will do just fine for the sound you are looking for.

Fulltone OCD is very very good. I remember trying it, only ended up buying the ZW OD because it adds sustain and was cheaper by a lot

You could try the always reliable BOSS SD-1

if you are looking for all that + something very affordable, the Coolcat Transparent OD is recommended:

Thanks for the suggestions!

As for budget, i think it would be somewhere around $250 max.
Don't mind spending as i'm going to use it quite a bit.

Stacking and cascading drives sounds like a good idea, i'd keep that in mind ladyintears.

Jekyll and Hyde sounds like a good choice too, versatile! However, i'm getting a Blackstar DistX soon so my high gain sounds are covered. But the J&H is a possibility!

Hmm the Fulltone OCD, i don't think its my thing. I've heard it over demos.

Oh yes the Coolcat! I've had the V1 Transparent OD and it was sweet! But perhaps smth with a little more gain would be better haha.

My SD-1 has handle all my OD needs for 2 years without it having been removed from my board..

That depends on what KIND of OD are you looking for. Are you gonna need the typical TS mid-hump and compression? Or do you want a less coloured one, something with a more neutral tonal structure. Do you need a boost to go along with it? Do you need dynamics to go along with it?

TS-types:
MJM Phantom Overdrive (straight up but kick-ass TS alternative)
BOSS SD-1 (albeit it is asymmetrical)
Fulltone FD-2 (with more modes and an inline boost)
G2D Creamtone (similar to FD-2)
BYOC OD2 (great TS with seperate boost in small enclosure)

Flat EQ:
Paul Cochrane Timmy (or Tim if you need the boost, but beyond budget)
Marshall BB-1 (hard to find this vintage pedal, or a BYOC alternative?)
N.O.C.3 Effects Pure Drive (with a great clean blend)
CMATmods Sigma Drive (really really great pedal, now has a deluxe version with boost)
Catalinbread Silverkiss MKII (sounds 'glassy' to be exact)
Pedal Tank BBlue OD (Thai pedal with blend knob, cheap too)

Although I think this pedal will serve you really really well:

Thanks for recommending this little box... :)

hijack abit here, fyi stocks in now... and i guess softies who own it can vouch for it :p

I'm still quite intrigued by it.. The clips sounds good and the pedal looks good as well.

One of the better made pedals in our region..

This is another one in our region (Indonesia) that looks good.. Cheap too!

Thanks Godspeed for your suggestions! I would like something more neutral and transparent. No need for a boost, and slightly compressed (To hide my playing) but with ample dynamics.
Regarding the Boss SD-1, its more of a creamy drive rather than gritty? Because my experience with a Boss DS-1 and MT-2 was rather bad, i didn't like the fizz. So i'm slightly skeptical about Boss drives.
And the Signa Drive looks attractive, where can i find one in Singapore?
I know about the Bblue but that might be slightly low in gain. Perhaps the G2 i'm not sure yet hah.

Yes Barber of course! I like the DD, or perhaps the new Super Sport. I'm planning to get an LTD SR for my lowest gain needs. Perhaps get a pedal to cascade over that, but not sure yet too.

Thanks for helping so far guys.

chapter2 - no worries, got a set for you on the reserved list...

ok, let not side track off the topic here! :P

BB preamp bro.
clean boost to mild overdrive to Overdrive.
Stack it and you can get a thicker and heavier gain
very transparent with good harmonics and dynamics.
:)
