I'm wondering what does the thing on the left do? the one orange in colour which u fiddle with ur left hand. and the knobs, can anyone tell me what fuctions do they serve?

Anyone know abt sampling workstations? cos i'm interested in that too!

Man you guys have been a great help! Much love to ya'll. :P

Midi notes consists of midi messages with many parameters. When you press a key, the "note on" midi message will come on and that tells your sound generator to play a note. When you release the key, the "note off" message will come on and the note will stop. There are many midi messages - sustain, velocity (how hard you play will give you the loudness of the sound), after-touch, portamento, vibrato, pitch bend etc etc etc. These parameters can be controlled by 1. the keys themselves (pressing them, pressing them further after holding the keys down etc), 2. switch pedals (like a sustain pedal), 3. expression pedals, 4, knobs, and 5. wheels (or stick in some keyboards). The 2 wheels you see are the pitch bend wheel (bends the note up or down - can program how many semitones you want to bend) and mod wheel. Controls can also control the timbre and colour of the sound by varying different parameters like panning, filters, oscillators etc.

Really, there are many more ways to control midi like the x-y-z controller on the picture you show above (round thing on the top left hand corner). They are all programmable and assignable.

Hey lowjk, what if I get it and sell you the controller for $70? I want to keep the Bass Station! :D

Too expensive for a used unit of Keystation Pro 88. However, M-audio has been overtaken by CME. I would get the UF8 over the Pro88 anytime. Anyway, I think the guy wants something smaller.

I ve tried using the Keystation Pro 88 for a gig before. My impression of it was:

too many knobs = total confusion on the stage ... well that's just me i guess ... always forget which knobs I assigned to the night before and for which songs. The keys are very light despite the keyboard weigh 20 kg over.

Yeah, I would prefer to get UF8 instead. Great feels on the keys ... pretty much the same with my clavinova ... More practical for playing live, easy access features and more user-friendly too ... downside is the usb features sometime give me problems ... so I use the midi out instead

I am using a CME UF7 for performing now. It is the best midi keyboard i ve played so far. Looks cool on the stage too

not for another 1 month though ... Now preparing myself for a 1 month oversea trip. I am in the middle of compiling repertoires for my new band .. Jiveoholics .. to play at pubs and hotels. Look out for us soon ... he he :D

Recently, i ve been jamming regularly at actor's pub on saturday nights. Just come down for a jam together and maybe a drink next month 8)
