Rarest Breed of musicians...

hoi! bassist play G7b5 also end up playing G most of the time what
surely i dont get to play the flat 5th unless i'm doing a solo or prog stuff etc....

Anyone heard of Randy Jackson?? muahahaha

That's why i say keyboardist should be the leader of the band, and not others who cannot play the keyboards.I am not saying about pianist who comes in the band and play piano stuff but keyboardist who can play drum, bass and guitars too plus Keyboard, hmmm seems like 80% of keyboardist are pianist...sad eh?

because most of them started off wif the acousitc piano when they were young.

u often hear this ,"boy boy come mummy want u to learn the piano" but i doubt u will ever hear this "boy boy come mummy want u to learn the keyboard"

usually parents would rather want their child to start off wif the piano rather than keyboard.

well also as a kid listening to rock its kinda hard to imagine urself rocking out behind a keyboard. (i think) many kids idolise bands that done really have a keyboard player and as such dont want to pick up the keyboard, i for example am inspired by metallica and took up the drums and not the keyboard.

if somehow hopefully in 10 years time if someone could create a keyboard as convenient as the guitar.like say maybe if someone could create a keyboard which is of equal size and weight as the guitar.i bet u keyboardist in the future will have no problem showing some showmanship on stage as compared to guitarist of today who jump wif their guitar , do the trademark yngwie guitar swing etc , i can assure u dat more and more will definitely take up the keyboard

cause i feel dat keyboardist lacked showmanship on stage cause of keyboards being too big to be move or even carried around easily as compared to guitars

I think keyboards/pianos are the most beautiful instrument around. Once you learn the keyboards, it's quite easy to pick up any other instruments because ur knowledge, ur theory is there...although the concept of virbrato and bends can be quite mind boggling for awhile!

I don't agree that keyboard can't be "showman". But it's not the same as guitar dudes. Keyboardist "showmanship" is with the same class as the drummer IMHO. They are both fixed in one position but they can still dazzle the audience with their skill and movements..etc I think showmanship doesn't mean only jumping around. Take Sonata Artica for exmaple, the keyboardist places his keyboards facing forward instead of upwards so that the audience can see his fingers fly...sometimes he straddles the keyboard too.

One stumbling block about pianos/keyboards is the cost of everything! It's just so damn ex!! If you want a good system running, be prepared to fork up to 10k... if you are ok with low end stuff...I think u still need to fork out 2k+. With that amount of money, I can get a good amp, a relatively good guitar and some effects to boot.

I think guitars are popular because they are versatile and it is easy to learn it's basics. Can sing and strum... most emo/pop songs only require you to learn power chords...then with distortion, ezy, don't even have to play it well to jam. Keyboards require much more skill to perform well.

But to be fair, guitars are not "that" easy as well. If you take the classical route, thats about 5 to 7 years for the grade 8, a few more years for the diploma/degree. Mastery calls for total dedication most of the time, if a guitarist wants to reproduce those pieces played by pianos, then really have to sit down and concentrate....(not simply blaze through monophonic style like Yngwie but polyphonic style)

take for example most pop songs of today.did u know that the keyboard creates the entire backdrop of the song.it's like the keyboard forms the entire solid foundation of the song followed by additional plug ins like guitar and lastly the vocals.basically i feel that people listen to pop songs without giving due thought to what created the backdrop for the song...i guess they are more interested in the aritiste's vocals and that's a really sad thing.it's always the case whereby the sound engineer or composer works long hours on the keyboard maybe even depriving himself of sleep juz to get the backdrop of the song and in the end , the artiste get all the fame and fortune juz by opening his/her mouth....

i guess the keyboard is like an unrecognised talent when it comes to appealing to the main stream masses....

personally i feel the RAREST musicians are those harp players....
keyboardists are aplenty compared to people who can play those..

it is true that pop songs of today can be composed/recorded/performed with keyboards and keyboards alone.. beyonce uses 3 keyboards at anyone time i heard? but it doesnt mean that beyonce is doing very little work and getting all the fame and money...
no offence but if she wasnt up on the stage shakin that booty infront of thousands the composer / sound engineer / stage crew ... nobody would get paid..

the selling point is the artist him/herself .. not the instruments that back them up..
the keyboard is recognised as a very important instrument.. especially in the recording aspect of mainstream music.. that is why its on virtually every song on radio..

triangle?

how about the triangle player?
ding ding ding?
who plays them well and have a ABRSM dip for it?

so like.... is any keyboardist out there available or what? 8O

i mean despite all the replies... they're still a rare breed and i AM looking for one. In fact for a while now.

It is unfair to say the the guitars and drums will drown out the keyboard, that is all a matter of sound balance and the song. Surely some songs will have the drums going softer, and some the keyboard plays very subliminal background. So i guess its all a generalisation...

Here's an idea for you:

If its currently only a 3 piece band of drummer, guitar, bassist, then the drowning out effect wouldn be as severe would it? Everyone plays an equally important role? 8)

actually i'm a classical trained pianist been playing for 10 months but actually started 2 years ago but due to some academic committments it's down to 10 months....so yeah i can play the keyboard but i just need some time to familarise myself wif the keyboard functions...

seriously i think harp players have a lot of patience in them.although they are a rarer breed of musicians as compared to keyboardist , their patience is wad i really admire in them.

if u guys think dat re-stringing and tuning a 12 string guitar is already a nightmare wait till u see a harp.a harp has roughly around 40 plus strings and each string has to be tuned accordingly before every performance.now what if the harp needs a new set of strings???? now that would be double the nightmare!!!!

u mean there is such thing as a blues harp??? i can imagine a harpist applying vibrato to the harp or maybe even half or full bends to a harp 8O

Well I can understand where you're coming from now. But one thing you gotta understand is that each instument has unique qualities. Keyboards, although being a 'Synthesizer', to me has ceased to become a simulation of other instruments at large. Keyboards have come a long way in the pop music industry. Some would agree it has its own sound these days.

Also, laymen (being non-musician and shallow appreciators of music) would find it hard to appreciate Steve Vai in his face, much less a groovy bassline, or a fantastic keyboard run at 2dB. Its just the way things are...
