Re: well if I offend anyone with my comment then I am sorry

Noooo that makes me more unhappy. Post. O well it's your choice.

hey purplehaze.. the way u say like that not constructive lar.... u do hav a gd point to point out.... but the way u say people not good lar... We not scolding u...dun like that lar... no one is pissed or angry lar... just want to correct u a bit lar... in life u hav to accept that once in a while unintentionally u may step on ppl toes... we all offend ppl b4 one... but we all must learn to still get along wat....

I personally think a keyboardist and his works will add a lot of substance to a song. And i definitely wouldn't mind playing the supporting role if i have the opportunity to play with a keyboardist who takes the center stage by playing Vitalij Kuprij songs.
Overall, i respect EVERY single keyboardist man!

i wanted to learn piano, didnt have luxury to get into any classes.. therefore i picked up guitar myself. and purplehaze was just trying to say.. dont put any instrument at a higher point than another... bye

treated like side man

With these few years playing in and out of a number of bands,
I personally felt that a keyboardist is always treated as a
side man, in another word, sessionist.

The basic members guitarist, bassist and drummer, they can't do
without one another but they can still play w/o the keyboardist.
The treatment is the keyboardist as a sideman; so in terms of the
band decision making for gigs and direction, the keybd man just listen
and follow only. No say in what so ever?

any comments?

Ooi!! We love you what!! 8O Me and Boon often discuss ways of getting you more involved in the originals. Its hard to balance 7 members you know!

Keyboards in the context of rock/metal bands are like the missing piece of the puzzle la. They COMPLETE whatever there is be it tonal stuff or melodies which are way too difficult for guitars to pull off. Nobody would ask their keyboardist to do strumming guitar sounds unless its for fun yeah!?

yay!! somebody loves me :D yea 7 members damn hard to balance boy, its a wonder we can coordinate to play something! next song: Britney Spears.

yeah and who ever did say that the keyboardist must do wadever the band says???? juz because the keyboardist is never the one on the front line on stage does not mean he has to do wadever the front line members tell him to...

but wad i personally feel is that usually the guitar and drum sounds tend to overpower the sound of the keyboard on stage depriving the keyboardist of showing his true potential to the audience.if a keyboardist were to do some solos on stage...i think it's the only way to give the audience a taste of keyboard music.other than that if a keyboardist were to promote his music i guess this is the only way possible...

frankly speaking i dun mean to offend anyone u here but although purplehaze did have some meaning to his post about every instrument should be of equal status which i totally respect his views.we keyboardist share a common problem and dat is we always get pushed around in a band and being neglected.i'm sure u know how it feels if u were in a keyboardist shoes rite? u feel as if u're the outcast member of the band...
i mean...it's basic human nature for each and everyone of us not to complain when we are in our comfort zone but to complain when we leave our comfort zone.

to share wif u a bit of myself , although i was like u , did not have the luxury to take up piano lessons and even buy a piano.when i finally managed to convinced my mom to allow me to take piano lessons and i know big boys dun cry but i actually cried because she said dat she could not cough up enough money to send me for piano lessons let alone get a piano as well.when my mom thought dat i was indeed serious about wanting to take up piano lessons , she borrowed money from my aunt juz so dat she could buy a 2nd hand piano for me to practice on and pay for my piano lessons (luckily my teacher is my mom's church fren and so got a bit of discount)...and yeah...this is where i am now :)

dammit no britney spears!

Yeah usually they get pushed by the arrangements. But if you're using a laptop, you can run a compressor/exciter and push the audio to the wall, then you'll be cutting right through anything that everybody else is playing.

Actually, most guitarists especially lead, has a duty to show off, thinking he is in the lime-light without listening to maybe Deep Purple, but then, keyboardist if he is piano-trained might only be soso, but if he is keyboard-synthesizer trained, then its a different story altogether,he is the MOst complete musician or shall i say the best musician in the band,as such,i think Keyboardist should be given full respect than others, but most guitarists or drummer dunnoe this. What a pity, keyboardist should be the leader of the band.

come on guys being a keyboardist is not so bad ...

the tricky part is that us as keyboardists is used to playing as a soloist and not in a band. That's why sometimes it's kinda difficult as to decide what kind of play/groove would suits the band ... the usual pop piano groove will not work on rock and roll songs ... it will get overpowered ... if you know what kind of voice, style of playing and groove that will suit the phrase in the song then the guitar and drums wont overpower you ... instead it will make the sound of the band more fuller ... and the band will need you and LOVE you ...

... and due to their versatility and the ability to hear the whole band from a more objective view, many of the keyboardists move on to become successful music producers.

that's why! stop bossing us keyboardists around if not i boss you back! huh u damn drummer! play an F note! Guitarist, play EIGHT notes! Bassist, play G7b5! muahah!!! keyboard so powerful!!!

but what's the use? its not any one instrument that dominates or should dominate. A mixture man. Every instrument should complement each other, and the best way for a band to rock hard together is if everybody else knoes not just what their doing, but whatever everyone ELSE in the band is doing also. and this is hard, because the keyboard is an elusive instrument. Sometimes, even the damn keyboardist himself don't knoe his own limits and his capablities, and every keyboardists has such vastly different experiences wiht keyboards/brands/technology. Can you fault the rest of the band from either having sky high expectations on him, or having such low ones to the point he's quite useless?

Mr_KeyboardMan

i guess it all boils down to wad kinda genre ur band is really into.u can't get any tom dick and harry keyboardist for ur band.to avoid disappointment , u have to find out the musical background of a keyboardist before making the final decision.i think that is the most common mistake dat band members usually make.they tend to think dat all keyboardist are pianist and i think its sooooooo not true.yes the keyboard is very similar to a piano and juz because both the keyboard and piano have black and white keys , it does not mean that a pianist and keyboardist are the same right?

the techniques involved in keyboard and piano playing is completely different.classical piano involves more emphasis on finger techniques while keyboard playing involves more emphasis on chords(correct me if i'm wrong but i'm not a keyboardist but a pianist).a pianist wif good finger techniques in my opinion should mix well in an instrumental band whereby melody really matters and a pianist wif good chord transitions techniques should mix well in a jazz band whereby jazz music emphasise on chords techniques...

bands should take into certain considerations when recruiting a keyboardist and not juz anyhow grab a keyboardist from the shelve

DoubleBlade

Actually being a keyboardist should know both, finger techniques (for solo) and Chords movement(for impro and grooves) or else cannot impro well and the grooves that you can create is limited.
