Question on palm muting

Hi peeps...newbie to guitar here...I was just wondering if you guys know what I need to do to get the sound of palm muting like Green Day's? I'm using a SX guitar beginner's edition, haha. Thanks in advance!

Hi i think you can try putting ur palm closer to your bridge. If you like, you can switch to a pickup with more bass too.

Yes I do, but I prefer amp distortion. Whack harder doesnt mean its because Im playing on a clean channel. Use less gain, and pick harder, get a more percussive sound. More gain, less picking dynamics and more noise.
chugga chugga is not all abt the gain. Something new for you to learn anep

haha.. dood.. err, that question was to the thread starter..
thnx for the short lesson though.. i see it now.. :D

Okay okay.
Darknessfury, what is your pup configuration on your SX? Hum Single Single or Single Single Single or what?

Next, what amp are you using?

On your guitar :
Change to bridge pickup (flick the toggle/switchblade all the way to the right)
When palm muting, rest the palm of your picking hand touching the strings JUST BEFORE they go into the bridge. The reason for this is that if you mute too near to the neck, the sound will be kinda muted instead of a bassy chugga chugga sound.

On your amp:
First thing, use the distortion channel, if you have a gain knob, put it at around 2 or 3 o'clock. For EQ, what I use when playing Greenday songs is to put bass at about 1 o'clock, mids at 12 o'clock, treble at 3 or 4 o'clock. Tweak them according to your preference and your guitar's tonal qualities. I have a copy of Total Guitar with a tab of Greenday's Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and the EQ they use is Treble - max, Mids - 12 o'clock, Bass - 12 o'clock, Reverb 8 o'clock, with gain at 12 o'clock.

One more important factor is your pick
The heavier the gauge the heavier the sound
The thickness make a lot of difference too
Downpicking helps too

What's a gauge? And how thick should the pick be? Mine's 0.97mm.

i'm sorry to offend people, but the some of the replies on this thread are not helping the original poster of this thread at all.

DarknessFury - please find another guitar player - your friend, your guitar teacher - and demonstrate palm muting to you live in front of your own eyes and ears. Your question is not a 1-dimensional problem which only has one solution and no one in the forum and accurately point out how exactly you should be doing it.
