Production Cost

Hi guys,
I'm wondering about what's the production cost might pay for an album recently?!
Nowadays, Studio still charges base in Studio time?
How's the business run now?

How much it charge for:
-studio time
-mixing & mastering
-recording
-producing (plan & guide)

do you think, a lot of friends around w'ld loves to go for home studio but sound not much difference from the large studio?! How's the charges of a home studio regarding the above details?

mactreouser :

bands in general go for a balanced factor for
- budget
- comfort
- trust
- result (sound)
- popularity

are you paying for the sound, the trust, the comfort, the experience of the producer etc. yes it's been discussed recently, some charge per song but may amount more than if you charged per hr. in general if the band practised heavily, they shouldn't worry a single thing about "per hr" infact they may save more cost than they incur if they did the pre-production beforehand. unless creative ideas come in on the spot during recording.

a band may want a studio with years of experience and portfolio and premium gear. or a band may want a flexible budget and compromise on someone with lesser high end gear. different bands have different needs.

hope this helps

One thing I wanna add is the room acoustic engineering(recording and console room). A well design room can cost a lot more than the gear itself. Usually I see they cost 3 digi per hour.

Thanks friends..it's really useful!! Appreciate ;)
bur seems it's short of rate to Music Arrangement & the composing (Lyrics & Music) rate ya?! Any idea bout it?

Only know that if you have a composition and wish to do a HMV quality one, is about $3000 for a pop/rock live playing song for studio to take care of the rest. I have done an account for my friend album is about $55,000 for 10 song(jazz band + string + horns + producer/arranger) before pressing. Also you must take account of album design too.

If you are looking for composer and lyricist the price varies, and subject to loyalties. For chinese song, most people will accept a lump sum and you own all the right to it.

Thanks KongWee.

So most of the time they'll just provide a package like what you wrote above S$55k for an Jazz album with live recording, right?

So, the S$3k is just a band recording?

mactreouser : it's a very subjective matter, but what matters the most is you have to know where your money is going to and whether is it worth. cos end of the day , your choice, your comfort, your sound, your music is all that matters (apart from money limitations). you may have one hand a popular composer who charges $5K a song because he worked with someone popular. and the other a darkhorse who charges probably lesser or he just does this for a hobby cos he has a secure income day job but able to deliver results equivalent. or you may end up preferring to work with someone young who's not as experienced but highly creative cos of his age.

Actually it is from 5 song at first then add other 5 more. Actually, a song you need to begin with a demo. From demo, you can determine how many player you need from studio. So the producer and arranger have to be precise on how player in each song, then the studio can make a package. As usually there will be a quotation. Of cos, there is much more in it. The studio will actually will able to advice you according.

Tips: if your arrangement involved 12 men string and above, try to contact china studio. Their afforable 2nd class player has the "SMAAMCTSSOACSM" standard. Some local studio do have these contact.

Hey, thanks to all of you again!! :D
actually, just wish to know bout the average quotation as a reference..at least be a good guide & start from there regarding the skill ability of each section like: Music Arrangement, recording, mixing & mastering..and so on. ;)

I don't think there is a way to learn. You need to know somebody who has done an album at least. But it is easy to scott for experience studio. You just have to read the studio portfolio especially what album are being produce.

mactreouser : u want to know the "average pricing quotation as a reference" so from the recording studio list, you can aga aga gauge demo recording studios from $10 - $40 , $50 - $60, and $80 and above/hr. but even with that it's just an estimated pricing.
it may be very private (to the bands/studios) and again misleading to state how much cost a song can rack up.so if you wanna find out in total, you will have to ask your friends personally who has done recording with this/that studio.

music arrangement can really vary between genres. so i'm not goin there.

apart from costs, like what kongwee has mentioned, check the studio's portfolio and ask yourself if you like what you hear and ask your wallet if it likes what it's paying for.

I just got the latest market rate for a awarded regional producer. 10 kilo buck per song entirety from the producer studio. There A and B grade too.

I alway ponder a question why people spend big buck on producing high quality album and never think what to do next with it. Is it people just contented to safe keep in the closet?

Thanks to all friends again!!! :D
Really, appreciate!!

1) Music Arrangement for a pop song -
2) Composing a Music & Lyric -

What's the average charges of the Music Arrangement & the Song and Lyric compose?
I heard that some charge about $2200 for a M.Arrangement (ofcause this is famours and busy arranger in the commercial line) & some charge about $1k,$1.2k...additional live instruments like Bass or Guitar will be add-on $200 each.
About Lyric & Music composing, some charge around $1.5k both and $1k each.
Is this the average? or I'm out of date? :p higher or lesser nowadays?
Thanks...
