Premier Olympic Drumset

Thanks edrummer! I went to the one located at Katong as Bras Basah branch did not seem to be very friendly...

This morning, I try to adjust the postions of my two tom to a lower level as I find them quite high for playing (maybe is because of my big bass). However, I don't seem to be able to position them far apart from each other and adjust them to a inches above the bass drum as few mins later, the tom would drop down and stay on the bass drum (luckily it did not slip down to the floor).

How can I encounter this?

Is it possible for me to get a tom mount from any of the musicshops to hold them this way? Anyway, the tom mount are not firm enough to hold the toms for long too..

I have tried that on my friends pearl kit, almost impossible to do it, cos the toms are 12 x 9 and 13 x 10 and ur bass drum is 22 inch? u can try improving pearl optimount but they arent cheap either, i might suggest you to buy a good tama/ gibralter drum throne and adjusting it high enough so that when u are seated, u can hit the toms without forgoing that much 'reach' :)

Yup, my bass drum is 22'' and the toms are also 12 x 9 & 13 x 10. Are your friends using the Forum series? And I thought that they have the I.S.S mount or somthing?

I will take your suggestion into consideration and if that's the case, the whole of the drum set will be set all high up! Btw, what do people normally do if they want to put on an extra eg. 8'' toms?

Before I put on the new heads on my kit, I had read some sources online indicating that Remo heads are guled and they need be leave on for 12 hours/drying using hair dryer after seating the heads?

Guys pardon my ingnorance but i dont see where this thread is going.

TS could you tell us what music your play and your influences then we can advise you accordingly.

Also could you tell us whats the wood/ply/finish/depth of your drumset so that we can know the potential of the drum sound.
You can get this off the manufacturers website.

A drumset is technically a drumset and the basics of a drumset will remain such. e.g better hardware (denser) helps sound travel and give better support to your cymbals.

So perhaps we can start with whats your influences and information on your drumset. (we could find for you but teaching you how to fish is better then us catching the fish for you.)

I play mostly pop and rock on my kit.

Some information about my drumset -
Toms - 12 x 9, 13 x 10 & 16 x 16. Bass drum 22 x 16 and snare 14 x 5.5. 6ply/6mm Basswood Shell Construction and PVC Finish.

Since the stock mount can't position the toms to my liking, I am considering getting the Gibraltar toms mount. What do you think? Will it be expensive?

U can get it, if not u can try mounting ur toms on a cymbal stand as well, just that it would be quite pricey, it should be a matter of getting used to it :)

K lets start with the wood construction. Basswood itself is a very mid'sy wood so depends on what kind of sound you wanna achieve
depends on what kind of skin you would like to use.
An Easy Reference to this would be to follow the chart on the Evan's box.

I would not recommend Hydrolic/Oil Skins because these dampen the sound alot enhansing more of the Bass.

Technically I would recommend EC2s if your budget allows it.
Just remember the basic theory that anything on your toms that rattle is bad for the resonance of the drum. Thus why free floating stands for toms are the best! So keeping it simple by having EC skins without the use of EQ rings your sound should be more open.

If anything I believe most kits stock mount can accomodate for your tom position just more of if you know how to adjust the stand accordingly.

Your snare size is just nice for versatile playing so your quite safe. I personally prefer a tight snare rather then a deep snare sound.
If you were to upgrade perhaps you should consider a wood picolo snare and a deep steel snare if you decide to go rock.

Cymbals wise I recommend the B8's for a good beginner rock set. After which you can either go into the Zildjian Z or the Paiste Alphas.

Did you use the tom lock?

Your Source about the heads are abit old.. i think thats only used for snare skins in the past when they used animal skin instead of plastic. =X

How long can my kit last (as Basswood is the lowest grade in the wood) - Do you think it's worth spending money on this kit eg. to change the heads, etc or to just change to a better drum instead?

Anyway as mentioned in the previous page, I had bought the Clear Remo Pinstripe and Ambassador and I will be fitting them soon when I have time. Mentioned earlier on too, I am interested in getting the Zildjian ZHT Pro set but up till now Yamaha still does not have the stock.

As for the toms mount, I had position them to the lowest point that the stock mount can take it without droping onto the bass drum. I don't think there is any tom lock on the mount.

If u do not expose ur drumset out in the sun and rain, it can last u for a very long time. Basswood is decent, no doubt they are used in low end drumsets but if properly tuned, they can sound good too. This is proven to me when I was in my previous drumschool which uses Mapex QR series for one of the studio's practice kits.

Well there isnt much of whether or not the wood is of good grade or not but how much potential the wood can sound spending less to upgrade the drums sound.

The drums will last you long as basswood is actually more sturdy then maple.

I dont quite like the sound of the ZHT because it has really high overtones something that gives you a slight headache after playing for awhile... or at least just me...

Tom lock/fastener looks like a ring that has a place that allows u to thighten using a drum key. This sets the tom into place.

The zht has high overtones man, i dont really like them also, and they are quite loud, go for an xs series sabian instead! or turkish cymbals from musiclab :) and changing heads etc are part of kit maintenance, so they are worth it, but as far as i am concern, dont spend too much on upgrades for this kit, i rather u save the money for a better kit, like pearl vision or tama superstar hyperdrive ;)

Are Basswood harder to tune compare to Poplar and Maple woods as many attempts I tried to tune my kit, I can't get the sound I want.

=edrummer

I will still wait for the stock to arrive and test the sound to see if I like it and if not, another consideration will be the Sabian Xs20 or the Paiste PST 5.

With regrads to the tom lock, the problem is that the notch adjusting the tom up and down will be loosen if I position the tom to the lowest point and it will fall off and stay on the bass drum.

Basswood can sound 'close' to maple if u know how to tune right..and of cos with the right heads, it can sound really decent. then again ur room acoustics will make ur drums to sound different. Try treating ur room walls with foams or curtains.
