Premier Olympic Drumset

Just fitted on the Pinstripe and Ambassador on my kit last thursday. Disappointed, not the sound I want. I am looking for a dry, tight, punchy sound. Not a large improvement as compared to the stock heads. The only thing I dislike the Pinstripe is that they are too plasticy sounding and dead. I can't tune them just above finger tight as there are lots of "gongy" sound (is this overtones or ring?) In the end I tuned all the toms medium tight and after the Remo O-rings are put on, the sound got much more better (but could hardly hear the tom sound as the snare are covering them). Will consider Coated Emperor for the next change of heads.

Also, I find that the 13" tom sound abit weird when using in most of the fill-ins and don't match with the 12" (had this problem on stock head too). Anyone here having the combination of 12x9 & 13x10 toms can feedback on this?

i duno if i got this right, i dont own an acoustic kit so far, but every head for a start sounds plasticy ._. i have seen videos whr ppl 'crack' the drumhead before tuning them, like putting the heads to finger tight, put the drum on the floor and put ur hands on the centre of the head and apply body weight on it.. result is a crack sound, to loosen the head up i guess? but correct me if im wrong.

tuning once, i have tuned the toms quite a number of times before. the thing is, the toms, one is 12", one is 13".. even at the same tuning, u get a much lower sound for the 13".. try to tune your 13" onli slightly lower than your 12" in terms of SOUND, not tension. sometimes your 13" might even be at a higher tension than your 12" for the 13" to sound only slightly lower than your 12".. This way it sounds less weird :)

hope this helps, though some of my info may not be right.. do correct me if i am wrong :X

I think, the evans reverse power dot, or the ec2 and get the sound that you want man, i think after u have tried evans, u might not like remo cos u arent impress with the pinstripe nor the ambassadors, and regarding the 12 x9 and 13 x 10 toms, the toms are rock size tom, which might not be able to get the sound of a 10 inch tom, and to get ur drums punchy, dead and tight, tuned it high ( tight) put a o ring or moon gel, u will get the sound :)

This is known as the seating process to ensure that the heads are fitted onto the bearing edges properly and hold the tuning better. There is no need to apply body weight on it IMO, as it might damage the lugs. Just tune it higher than the normal playing pitch and it will seat the head by itself.

Only clear heads especially the Pinstripes will sound plasticy. Coated heads will sound more like a drums...

With regrads to the 13" tom, I always tune my drum a 4th apart. Maybe someone here can advise if I can tune the 13" tom in the way that it sound like a 14"?

Hmm if you have a chance to go to LIVEAMP studio at outram park.
Their TAMA drumsets are incredible. I forget which series, they use remo uncoated heads and i can tell you the tama toms are super solid and nice. Absolutely no plastic sound. They added o rings though. Good sounding drums gives you lots of inspirations.

what i mean is, check out their drumheads and hear for yourself if that is the sound u want., go find out what drum heads they are made up of. That might help you deepen your knowledge.

I'm sure different drum shells material can be tune to its best if given good drumheads and tuning. I think you can get the sound you want.

I won't try the EC2s as I have heard feedbacks that they sound more plasticy than the Pinstripe and abit weird due to the SST thing. If I am going for Evans, I might try out the Coated G2 instead. Yup, putting on the Rem-Os did get the sound I want but they really soften the sound quite alot. Maybe I am considering the Coated Powerstroke 3 or 4, what do you think?

Also with regrads to the snare wire, where can I find Puresound's snare wire here?

No worries, your reply was linked to my question :) What I am aiming for is hopefully I can make my kit to sound like a Forum as I have heard them sounding "boom boom boom" with O-rings. Indeed, inspirations comes from a good sounding kit!

yeah my forum sort of sounds like boom boom boom punchy sound. But still not what i want, maybe i can try get some o rings and put on to see if it sounds more boom. BTW i am using evans g2 on my toms. Got the boom boom boom effect. Maybe G1 can do better?

But forum snare really is bad. Mine i tune many ways already still bad sounding. I use coated evans power center reverse dot for snare. Sounds like plastic. Maybe the drumhead not good, needa change.

I got 4 puresound snare wires with me now, i bought them from hong kong, but if u would want to buy, go and find nigel gan @drumresources, one is about $40- $50, if not u can try canopus snare wire, $40, i got one, sounds very good :)

The Forum I had heard are using stock heads even on the snare and bass drum. The snare is not bad actually, it really sound like a snare unlike mine (like lion dance)! Btw how do you tune your snare, using musical note or?

Which model did you get for the Puresound snare wire, the Custom? Also, maybe I am getting the Tama Starclassic (carbon steel) snare wire, is that good?

I got the custom, and the custom pros and the blaster, the custom pro was the most ex, btw, the tama starclassic carbon steel snare wire is not bad, but i still prefer the puresounds or the canopus :)

So if I get the Starclassic snare wire and change the snare head to Coated Ambassador and Hazy on the bottom, I will get like 80% improvement on the sound?

Just a few updates. I figured out on how to position my toms to my liking (low and spread apart) using the tom lock and the tom did not rub against the bass drum this time. But I did want to risk it and in the end, position them back to the normal high level. Lastly, I than noticed that my throne does not have a memory lock! I am getting one but does anyone here know the size of the throne pipe?

Yes, you would get an improvement in the sound, from what i have done to my snares in the past, i found out that the top head, aka the batter head, has the most improvement in sound quality, but the snare wires give an even better snare sound after upgrading :)

I have a Premier Olympic Fusion Kit. I brought it at $990 at a Music Shop in Simei MRT. Mine i changed my tomtom drum heads to Evan G2 Clear. It sounds very great. Trust me. My kit toms are 10" , 12" , snare 14" and floor tom 14" . i would suggest you change your Premier Pedal to a better one. And hi hat stand doesnt need to change unless you want it!

Its really down to your tuning skills, the snare wire tension, and what bottom head you are using, the bottom head affects the sound quite tremendously, i love remo ambassador snare hazy for the bottom skin, and of course, try not to tighten the snare wires too much which would result in chokage of sounds..
