Well, hand hammered cymbals sound darker, but for my budget, i would buy alvin tan's turkish cymbals, i heard them before, they sound good, and johann sold me the istanbul samyata ride cymbal, it sounds good, but not cheap though to buy new one!
Thanks for your reply! Are the Istanbul Mehmet Samatya ride heavy? Do I need to take the weight of the cymbals into consideration when testing for cymbals?
Anyway, do you mind telling me how much you got for and how old is the ride?
The samatya ride has strong dark overtones,in some way, my church ppl complain that it is loud because of the overtones, but it sounds sweet to me, the ride is slightly heavier than usual, but the feel of the ride feels slightly harder when it is heavier
Last friday, I took out both the top and bottom heads of my 13'' tom as I noticed there are some tiny hairy thing covering almost all the edges of the wood to clean. Only my 13'' tom was affected with this. Someone once told me that it's because of the moisture in my room, is it true? Any of you had encountered this and can advise me on how to solve this problem and will it damage the shells? Do you know of any polishes to protect the woods?
I suspect that there are bacteria (not sure of the term for it) growing on both the top and bottom edges on my 13'' tom. They are just located at the tiny space between the heads and the wood where the heads sit on it. I belive they start growing a week or two after the drumset arrived my house. I reliased this about a month ago and finally took both the heads out last friday and clean them. However, they start to grow again this monday. Will they damage the shell?
Can someone advise me that why do they grow on the shell and how can I fully get rid of them? Thanks.
i cant help too much on this area as i dont own a drumset myself, but what i suspect is growing is fungi, and the possible reasons could be moisture in/area the area where your drums are set up. Some people say that buying Thirsty Hippo and putting it around the drums help? but another way is to set your drums up somewhere else where u think should hv less moisture e.g. away form the window/toilet/washing area etc
Thanks for your reply! I will consider buying Thirsty Hippo (they are expensive and lasts only for a month) and hope it will fully get rid of them. My drums are set in a room away from the windows and there is no toilet in it. I still can't figured out why they still grow on my tom.
I could not get the Remo Clear Pinstripe and Ambassador from Swee Lee as they do not have any stock left. The same goes for Evans as Yahama does'nt have any EC2 left. So, what I am considering is getting the Aquarian Clear Response ll and Classic. Are they as good as the Remo and Evans? Will it sounds wierd if I mix the head eg. Remo Pinstripe on the top and Evans G1 on the bottom?
The new stock from swee lee is here soon, i would advise for your premier olympic, use emperor as top heads, and ambassador or diplomats as bottom heads, the sound of the toms would be nice
Thanks edrummer for your advise. Would you give me a call (if you don't mind) or pm when the stock arrive as when I called all the 3 showroom last thursday to check the stock, the saleman was not very happy checking them.
Is it true that the Remo Pinstripe and Emperor are the same? Can the Emperor take hard hitting like the Pinstripe?
Emperor is a 2 ply head that is an alternative to ambassador if you want smth that is not as bright as ambassador and stronger, pinstripe is actually made by 2 layer of remo diplomat together, so using pinstripe will get u a fat and warm sound on your toms which i like it, but you can try evans g2 heads as well, they sound great too
Thanks for your reply! Do you know by when will the stock arrive at Swee Lee?
So both the Remo Emperor and Pinstripe are muffled, 2 ply heads? Any difference between muffled and non-muffled heads? And I thought the Evans EC2 is the subsitute of Remo Pinstripe?
They arent muffled at all, powerstroke 3 is muffled ,but emperor and pinstripe arent, they are just 2 ply drum heads, btw evans ec2 isnt a subsitute of remp pinstripe, it is an unique model by itself and ec2 is great if you want to get some controlled fat sound as well
It is nice of edrummer who replies almost every question of yours. If u wanna look or read about more, u can easily go read up on drumheads from the various respective makers website, be it Evans, Remo, they have alot of descriptions there as in how many plys etc. There is alot of spoonfeeding here, as for prices, why dun u call up Ranking and Yamaha to check? Drumheads do not get damaged so easily esp those stored properly. As long it is not crumpled or look trampled by an elephant, it should be alright. Have u ever looked and feel how a new drumhead is like in Swee Lee or in Ranking whatsoever? And things like when will Swee Lee have stock? Seriously sometimes the people there wun even know themselves.
It is not wrong to ask, but many a times, u can just find out the answer urself with a phone call, especially very simple things like, how much is something or whether there is stock for certain things.
For the bottom head, aka resonant head, u use the remo diplomat, u dont want to choke the drum with smth thick, as for the price, i find ranking better priced, even though i have 10% from yamaha , cheers
I had just bought the Clear Remo Pinstripe and Ambassador from Swee Lee yesterday. The price seems to be good and cheaper than Evans heads. Will put the heads on when I have time and update you all the result.
Which swee lee branch did u go to? btw, feel free to ask me anything friend, i will serve as it quizzes for me to rmb those drum gears, btw, have fun with those heads, remo always sounds great
