preferred skins for brush work?

hi all,

i'm currently using evans etched on a yamaha oak custom snare.
am thinking of trying out other suitable skins.

any recommendations?

yea the description of it sounds cool, can't seem to ship it over and swee lee doesn't have it.

there's vpost but shipping 1 or 2 skins over is still robbery.

have you tried it, or do you happen to know where in sg it's available?

SL does get them Fiberskyns in, just in small quantities.

I'd suggest reserving what you need with them - ask them to call you up when the stock comes in.

My church has a Remo djembe with a Fiberskyn head, it's great for hand-drumming as well as brushwork.

I like the basic Remo coated Ambs, but they can sound a little harsh when new (depending on your touch and type of brushes).

Those who can't wait for the coating to be 'seasoned' thru playing actually lightly sand off the coated so it's not so rough - To each his own ears and feel :)

You may also want to try Aquarian Modern Vintage or Texture Coated.

Evans EC1 Coated and GPlus Coated. Don't think you can get 'em locally yet though. Haven't visited Ranking/Nigel in a while, plus I ordered mine off a Evans dealer on DF.

will recce the heads you guys suggested.

weckl x, i have a remo djembe with fiberskyn as well and you're right, it's very responsive.

hi shaun,

i got a 14" fiberskyn3 from SL just a couple months ago, there were couple more and also the 13" ones, guess they were picked up.

i've found the remo amb need some time and "brushing" to smoothen too. i have 2 snares side by side in my room and although the fiberskyns sound less open and resonant, i prefer them over the ambs.

how do you find the etched skins so far? i've not tried them...

what do you think of a classic open, evans G1? (im thinking of buying one to try.. i use them a lot on toms)

Never tried the EC2 coated on the snare. Not ever gonna put a 2-ply on the snare.

Go with what Weckl-x suggested. Coated Ambs are good enough, 'cept they might flake.

It also depends on your snare setup and tuning.

Are the J1s not working for you?

hey alfe,

so iyo fibersykn's more responsive to brushes but yet less ringy / more controlled? what's the price like? the etched is rather versatile, sits well with oak and denser woods. very little displeasing overtones when done funk but somehow the "crack" that is suitable for funk can get quite annoying on classic swing tunes.

personally i don't enjoy the G1s as much, they're very resonant. is that why you're thinking of trying them (with brushes)? might just work...

jeepers:

the J1s are good, but their high ends and overtones are a little modern. am looking for something more traditional but enhanced at the same time (too demanding eh)...coated ambs need some sanding down before they play nicely, and when they finally sweeten they don't last that long before the coat is gone.

i would say fiberskins are less responsive/resonant overall compared to ambassadors / g1 but in return it sounds warmer. because it will generate less overtones, it will allow you to play with stronger sweeps and general strength overall.

one other thing i like about fiberskins is the skin is similar in feel to some hand percussion skins like those you find on bongos. slap on one and u can have some finger fun !! haha

I think i got mine at $40 before SL standard 20% (i think i paid $32 something for it)

I was checking out marcus baylor's kit at his masterclass and noticed that he was using coated powerstrokes on yamaha elvin jones signature.

i'm not sure if it was the powerstroke 3 or 4, i didn't wanna go GAS on him and get whacked

I think there's a whole wide world out there one can explore in terms of heads and different woods.

cheers

Dropped by Swee Lee this afternoon since I was at Ranking getting bass drum claws for my snare.

Fiberskyns are out. Can't quite remember what I saw on the rack, but I'm quite sure there are Ambs. It'd be so screwed up if they were also out of Ambs.

For Fiberskyn, don't go for ambassador, instead get the diplomat. Fiberskyn ambassador is thicker than coated ambassador and feels like a double ply. This is due to the unique way of manufacturing method of fiberskyn heads.

Therefore, for fiberskyn:

Diplomat weight = Coated Ambassador weight

Ambassador weight = Coated Emperor weight

I had used both weights and when I changed to diplomat, the drum sings well! I use Fiberskyn diplomat on all drums of my kit after that. Sadly, SL doesn't bring in the diplomat weight, maybe due to knowledge ignorance.

Hi there all, don't mind if I jump onto this thread. It seems like the issue of fiberskyn has come up. I was thinking of slapping one on the resonant head of my 18" bass drum.

Could someone educate me about its pros and cons? Is it versatile?
I was looking at a coated powerstroke3/fiberskyn combi. Looking to play across pop/rock/jazz...

I've been using a renaissance head on my snare, and a fibreskyn as my bass reso (mainly for the looks, admittedly, but still...)

My bass has a PS3 batter with a fibreskyn reso. I used to use it completely unmuffled. It was quite nice, a good balance between boomyness and punchyness. But after a while I put a thin pillow stretching across the bottom. This improved the attack quite a lot. Since I was playing in a relatively bare room, the echoes were too much for the booming. I'm loving the sound I get out of it currently. Pretty much never use uncoated heads, there's just something about coated and fibreskynand renaissance that just feels better.

These skins in general seem to dry out the tone but warm and round it up. I really prefer this sound, maybe because I'm used to hearing calf-skin headed toms from chinese orchestra, and I love the sound that comes from it.
