preferred bass strings?

hi guys.
me i bought a BB414 from the yamaha shop in Plaza Singapura in 2006.
thing is, i havent changed the strings even til now.
i have been using the stock strings which was already on the bass from that shop.
the strings now only got like bits of rust on it, but playing it is still smoooth.
although its not as bright-sounding as it was 2 years ago, it still is bright enough for my bright selection of songs. =D

seriously, heavily used for the past 2 years, plus my sweaty palm/hand, and still is in my 'bright requirement' gauge now. but i think its best to just change it now. but i do not know at all what brand of strings it is, and also the gauge too. anyone knows what strings the yamaha shop in PS use for their stock strings for basses???

I use mostly DR and TI strings. TI especially for the Jazz rounds which I use on my fretless exclusively. Haven't come across anything better yet :)

Am about to try out the new Sadowsky strings though... I hear they're pretty good.

hmm i'm using rotosound 45`105, but still dun really fell the growl... shinobi recommended DR Lo riders... but dun think its found anywhere in SG...

lo-riders are not especially heavy gauge, but DR claims that they are higher tension. there was some guy who was orgasing about them on soft last time.

if you want heavy, go for ernie ball. they got alot of heavy sets. i dunno why

and since my last post, my strings are not that bright anymore, despite all my efforts to clean off my sweat. now they are bearably bright. last time were unbearably bright

DR extra life's are not as smooth as elixirs. have yet to try cleartone. maybe in another 6 month's time (lighter gauge, please...)

Hey i'm planning to change the strings on my jazz bass. But i'm not sure of the current gauge right now. And i've never changed bass strings though i've stringed guitars. So what gauge would you recommend? Something affordable i hope :)
Ps: How are Dean Markley bass strings? I'm biased towards Dean Markley cause i love their guitar strings. Hehehe.

the standard gauge is from .105 onwards. you can try out rotosounds or dr strings, i recommend them.

i personally like thomastik infeld powerbass, but they are prohibitively expensive.

Hey I stringed on my DR Extra Life Red Devils on my Jazz last night.
I found that the sound when slapping is extremely metallic and twangy and too treblely.
Is that the sound of DR strings? I was previously using Daddarios XL and i liked that sound.

as long as your strings have enough tension at whatever tuning you are playing, i don't see the need to use heavy gauge. because there's not much difference in tone

yeah the DR extra life is super bright. but give it like 3 or 4 days with alot of usage. even coated radioactive diamond studded strings will dead-en

I use Elixir Nanowebs. Sounds good after 6 months of playing. In the past, I only change the strings after 1 year of usage. The bass is played once a week in church though, maybe that's y.

Love this thread. Now tempted to try other strings.

i just put on a new set of rotosound flatwounds on my bass for a change.. anyone here uses these?

First impressions are that i need to fret harder in order not to get fret buzz... ?? not sure if this is a common phenomena with flatwounds.

maybe you need to re-setup your bass.

I think its got to do more with my touch than the setup. I have a very light fretting hand so I think the flatwounds react badly to that... they sort of rattle against the fret if i press a tad too soft. Somehow the roundwounds don't do that.

Think I'm going back to my roundwounds... the flatwounds feel a bit 'sticky' to my plucking finger also.. can't get used to it!!! haha..

well.. i have the same problem with you. roto flats messed up my set up badly, high tension and "sticky" like you mentioned. gave up in the end and went back to RWs. currently using DR lo-rider nickel, excellent strings, esp great for finger funk with awesome mids growl.
