EL34 are power tubes.

Preamp tubes depends on what amps you are running.
Most have 12AX7s in them.

My standard are just JJ 12AX7s. Consistent I guess.

thnx for your reply, but wats the diff. between ecc & 12ax7?? low noise? high gain?? or??

Nothing actually, its just a different name for the same thing by different manufacturers.

12AX7 and 12AY7 have tonal differences and are interchangable within a preamp circuit.

you can do a bit of googling to find the answers... some tubes are actually interchangeable but have different names because Americans and Europeans gave them different names.. :)

It should be ECC83, there are a lot of tubes that are interchangable.

The 12A*7s are variants of each other and can be swapped.

Actually they are just different names for the same thing.

Quality isn't an issue if you get one from a reliable manufacturer.

Tonal preferences are usually the ones that gravitate users to certain brands for certain tubes.

It's ok to use a good quality 12ax7 from JJ, Sveltlana, EI, Tungsol, Mullard though they will all sound kinda different depending on how hard they are driven

The E83CC is a 'high quality' of 12AX7

The meaning is not 'High Quality' dah Dey!! I'ts just a term or model number, the American term for 12AX7 is ECC83s. 12AX7 term normally use by the British.

If you wanna High Gain type normally I would use JJs ECC83s or the higher quality type is ECC83sG with the G behind means gold. JJ was originally Tesla rename after they was bought over.
You can use a Mullard 12AX7 in replacement 1 of the better brands in Tubes.
Others maybe Sovtek, Svetlana or the Chinese Tubes.

Chinese tubes are a bit on the trebly side not really a High Gain tubes. Todays Marshall uses Chinese Tubes usually, they rename it as Marshall Tubes but actually the tubes are Chinese tubes.

Anyway it's a matter of taste and preference, it's not weather its good or not good, you have to try and hear it for yourself, but in order to do that it's a bit pricey or whenever you change your Preamp tubes try a different brand and hear it for youtself. If you are a regular user, pre amp tubes can be change maybe about 2 years once depending on the usage, Other Power Tubes is about 1000hours of usage.

Yeah totally not surprise that huge amp companies such as marshalls or vht uses chinese tubes.....they are cheap and not bad for its price, tone wise i still find them alittle lacking though.....For 12ax7s I highly recommend either Mullards or Tungsols, or if you have the $$$, NOS tubes are always the BOMB!
