Hi all, I'm wondering, is it possible to learn guitar thru course material without formal lessons at all?

Anyone has mastered guitar by own effort?

hey I think its possible!
because even those guitar teachers master it themselves and just sharing their skill to others..
so its really possible.. and need to put our heart and soul to it.. and patience

good luck guitarist:D

many many world renown guitarist were self taught. i cannot say i've mastered guitar. but i've nvr attended lessons once in my life for guitar.

if they can do it, so can you. :-D

Thks pals! I'm motivated by ur words of encouragement! Heee heee.

Shall put in more effort to do it from now. :) U guys mastered it urself? *salute* hehe

i never had a formal lesson. though i'm not a master, i can play well. im sure many other softies here are self-taught as well. :D

you can do it!

i was wondering the same thing too.

But cn one really "master" the guitar without any background in music. there are so many things with learning guitar. im sure u dun consider a person who onli cn play from tabs a master even if it is indeed a very diffcult song. To me,a person who is really good would be able to write his own music, nice improv, etc... so is really very diffcult if u dun hav a piano background or what ever..even though everything is on the internet,i find it quite messy to piece together and understand.

Juz what i feel personally..

A lot of people learn by themselves, just like me, the only problem is that i can't read notes. Always remember that if they can do it, whats stopping you:cool:

Billy Joe Armstrong (green day) was self-taught right? He is the guy who inspired me to pick up guitar. But i feel that you shld go for maybe a few months of guitar lessons as the earlier stages of learning guitar is very diff.

i have been self taught and am at a reasonably stable level but i do not consider myself having mastered the instrument as there is alot to learn. i still believe in getting a teacher for help

it is indeed possible to master the guitar being partially or totally self taught. the only thing, however, is that when you teach yourself to play guitar, bear in mind that no one is guiding and following up with you on learning the instrument. and you may not notice it, but bad habits in guitar playing will eventually start to form if you aren't aware of what you are doing.

BUT if you are aware of what you are teaching yourself and applying the correct techniques and theory to your playing, you can then consider yourself having mastered the instrument.

so remember; practice hard, and practice SMART.

cheers =)

Try playing the guitar and this are the things to note 1. you must be comfortable when u play 2. The sound that comes out from the guitar is the sound u want to hear.
That's it you have mastered the guitar!!
How to feel comfortable while u play and get the sound ?
Trial and error

am self taught
picked up and understood everything i know so far thru experimentation and practice.
must have good ears and sharp mind thou, could shorten the process even more if u understand some theory ( me totally none, stil cant read the taogehs :P )

and i agree at times i realli wish someone was there to shorten the process. now all hail youtube, improved much more in this past 1 yr ever since i got my first own elec guitar than i ever had in the past 9 yrs.

after learning more about the "proper" ways , had to weed out some bad habits acquired thruout the years.

wont say im very very proficient player already, stil alot more to learn.sometimes its good to keep revisiting the basic stuff, even if it can be quite plain boring. :D

oh yeah most important for me thou is "feel" this i find very hard to explain :o

That's the thing you will unlock by yourself, yeah some books/ppl can show you how they do it,but the feel, it's all up to you. This feel will identify you from the rest of the guitarist.

I think mastering guitar urself can create ur very own unique playing style and most important is to have motivation n the so called 'FEEL' ;)

how do define "mastering the guitar"?

Steve Vai? He wasn't self taught.

Honestly, can one learn to play the guitar by themselves? the answer is most likely yes. Can one get proficient? also yes. But can one reach the higher levels of musical appreciation thru the guitar without formal musical training? yes, if you have talent.

And talent is very rare. 90% of us can't.

Haha. Mastering the guitar? To what extent? Like Kirk Hammet? Joe Sat? Steve?
I don't know about others, but for me. I didn't go for lessons. Learnt everything/or most from the internet and trial and error, people. However,IMHO,the main thing is yourself. You must know what you want to learn, and know how much you want to learn. Not only learning though. Put in love, passion, interest and hard work. It's up to the person individually I guess?
Just to share. I used to put in 8 hours+ of guitar everyday when I first picked it up. Hahahaha. Now,it's a different story? I'm not saying to go learn guitar everyday after you come back from school,or stay in your room from 9 a.m to 8 p.m on the guitar. Hahaha.
www.ultimate-guitar.com is a great place to learn IMO.

u cant learn guitar by urself only.

u need a GUITAR, damn it!! ok i dont think anyone is self taught by definition. i give u a guitar, only a guitar, learn to play now! u cant. u need books, u need internet, videos, etc etc.
