Possible To Master Guitar Without Formal Lesson?

Possible to share what are the bad habits that self-taught guitarist usually encounter?

Bad technique and sloppy playing. Feel is simply about finding yourself, your idea of feel can be totally different from what other people think. The key is to not give a flying F*CK about what people tell you about feel and just experiment. Most people say malmsteen has no feel, I say he's got among the best feel I can connect with.

i think to master the guitar requires alot of dedication.

i've had my fair share of practice but what helped my playing the most was the countless hours i spent studying articles on music theory online on my own. that said, technique and listening is very important. train technique by trying new ways of playing the guitar and technique exercises with discipline and listen widely.

to me theory is an extremely important factor as i've seen and heard many bands in the local scene and most just learn their stuff from tabs without an idea of how to transpose the licks they've learnt into other keys for other situations. they can't jam and write their own stuff well because the theory foundation isn't there. unless you have perfect pitch, relative perfect pitch or synesthesia with the ability to identify every note by ear on your fretboard, your ears can't teach you enough how to play other's stuff and apply them to different situations.

rhythmically expose yourself also, to different beats and rhythms. it'll help you jam in a band and teach you how to play with attacks.

thanks for reading (:

to TS,

you can buy online corr lesson from Tom hess
and here's the link, tomhess.net

one advise from him and through my experience is to get a teacher, and it can save you many years to reach your goals.

but sadly, in singapore,
we don have many good guitar teachers and do not confuse with the equation that good teachers = a top notch shredder or excellent players.
it doesnt usually works that way.

Go and search for his articles how to choose a teacher?

cheers and good luck!

if you can.. just take lessons. It would save you a whole alotta time, frustration, injuries, give you motivation, tips and helps you progress steadily.

Don't forget steve vai took lessons as well. Many 'masters' of guitar even attend music colleges or guitar schools..

here some of them:
john petrucci, paul gilbert, joe satriani, zakk wylde, kirk hamment, frank gambale, synyster gates, mark tremonti, Chris Broderick, Scott Henderson, Jennifer Batten, John Frusciante, Buckethead.

sure you can go without lessons. but if you can.. why not?

My teacher Addy Rasidi aka Addy Cradle is a very good guitar, good composer and good teacher and his also very handsome haha

I think one of the bad habits I have been doing all these years is procrastinating my learning and improving myself to a whole new level.
Sigh.....

I think I know why u have that bad habit. Because music is a hobby for u not a career. For me is going to be a career so no choice lah need to practice and learn like crazy

Ah yeah.... No choice for you though.:p
But I'm like, "Okay, I'm gonna jam this song next week"
Then I will drag drag drag until like a month. Hahaha

though guitar is my favourite hobby, i learn and play seriously, that's why my progress is much better than my friends... but not as pro though.

It really a gift and passion...

but to say mastered, even the some of the pros I know do not are to say that, cause there is so much to learn..

What I can see is that, a guitarist is naturally one, whether to take lessons or not.

Meaning if you take lessons for years and still cannot, something is not right...

but if you take very few lessons, and if you already completed the book all by yourself even before the teacher teaches quarter or half of the book, these most likely means that you are meant to be a guitarist..

and of course it must be accompanied by passion and hardwork...

yap that's right. there is much more to learn...

another question to helps the TS,
is

what's makes a good teacher?

&

what should a good teacher do to help him to achieve his Goal FASTER?

no doubt the most important 2 things for me are interest and passion. it is always good to share with people who knows more than you, be them teachers or friends. you need someone to explain to you printed materials.

all the best and rock on!!

personally, i would feel that it would be good if you have a teacher to give some pointers if you want to master guitar FASTER.

I never had a single lesson since the day I picked up my first guitar

it's how determined you are to learn it
