geeezz i get so confused with modes i get a teacher but i still cant understand modes..currently i stop my lesson..but theres this one thing that i really wanna learn ..its MODES plz can somebody explain it clearly to me!! n plz plz plz help me !!
One post won't answer all your questions. You'll have to get your hands a bit dirty and do some work to really understand the modes.
But, I'll start with a question:
Do you understand that the 6 other major scale modes(besides Ionian/major) are really just inversions of the Ionian scale?
I would suggest that you record a root note...say C and then just play out all the modes in C - C ionian,C dorian etcetc...to get a feel of the difference in sound....
then if u would like learn as much as u can online, there is enough information on how to teach yourself the modes,i would recommend you try the frank gambale instructional...modes made easier or improvisation....
may i know where to find those video?? umm the inversion mean?? is it the dorian,phrygian,lydian,.......etc,etc??? i'd read a few modes lesson but i still dun get it BLEAH!!! im really stuck in this thing .. plz help me hhahah
the thing that im wondering about is about how to apply modes in our song??
i mean if we play in C muz we play the 7 modes in C?? like C ionian,Dorian n .....etc
or another thing is C ionian,D dorian, E phrygian??? bleah i dun undastand about that
Modes basically go in order. Ionian->Dorian->Phygrian->Lydian->Mixo->Aeolian->Locrian.
all modes are basically inversions of the Ionian mode.let's take C Ionian, the notes would be:C,D,E,F,G,A,B. now, D Dorian would be the same as C Ionian BUT is starts with D, thus the order of notes are,E,F,G,A,B,C. same goes E Phygrian,F Lydian,G Mixo, A Aeolian, B Locrian.
ok thx .. i undastand that clearly..now but another thing is on how to apply modes .. i read it sumwhere that theres 2 way of applying modes.. detriative n parallel.. i dun quite get it..
C ionian, D dorian, E phrygian ...etc (all of them = the breaking down of C ionian??) right??
But wad about the C ionian, Cdorian , Cphrygian ...etc
which way to apply?? hahaha
as for the 1st one.. we are juz applying Cmajor scale..
confused.. but thx though i undastand sumthing
C ionian, Cdorian , Cphrygian ... etc. Some modes sound better on some chords - eg One mode may sound better on a minor7 than a maj7. You can play a mode over a chord to find out.
The principal of applying modes is not just the scale ... it's the Chord progression ... You can play a Single C5 and play any modes you want becasue the Chord Quality is open to any moods .... But if you play a progression .... it's a different story.
Progression 1: |Am7 | D9 |: |
You can use an A Aeolian or A Dorian for this. This is because A can be the 6th of C .... or the 2nd Chord of G .... which both includes both the chords.
Progression 2: |Am7 | C Gm|: |
For this you can use A Phrygian .... because it's the the third of F.
Progression 3: |A | G | : |
You can use A maj for A chord ... when it hits G, you have to use A MixoLydian ... why? coz A mixo is fifth of D. And this progression has a D key.
Progression 4: | A | A | B | B | : |
Give it a bit more space .... just run your A lydian thru this ... because it really is an E Ionian. A and B are from E.
thx man.. i still dun undastand.. but ill read it agen n agen n agen.. ne wya ive read it a few times but i juz dun get it.. perhaps im slow hahaha. but well i gonna learn it till i undastand.. e way u explain is v specific i kinda getting it alil ..thx ne way
