Please comment on my singing!

Mmm i've heard the radiohead originals and can understand the cool, laid-back vocal style you're trying to mimic; thom yorke gives off that vibe while still having his lyrics sung with pretty clear distinction between most of the words. He does the slurring thing quite often too, but it's not overwhelming every part of the song.
What i hear is i'vebeenthinkingaboutyou all joined together, with the slur strong to the point that your singing sounds abit emotionless, like a dead fish. It also sounds like you're focusing too much on the way you're pronouncing the words, cos it sounds rather coerced.
Also, were you striving for the nasality or it's just me?
Sorry, can't say i feel the singing too much

Brian..Brian..that's not singing. That's what we call talking or mumbling. Sorry man, just my honest review.

Try something else.

^lol.

no i think you can do better. i don't think it's all that good now... to be honest. the nasality irks me. but it's not totally awful, if you get what i mean.

try singing to a backing track?

Thanks for the feedback guys! I get that I'm on the nasal side, but not overpoweringly so.

How about my tone? Can you give me some feedback on that?

I'm not trying to copy Thom's style, but I have listened to him a lot so there are probably similarities. I'm not striving for nasality either .. but I am taking care not to let my voice get muddy, which was one of my biggest problems previously. Avoiding that makes it easy to go nasal instead.

As for how to tell if you have a nasal voice, record yourself and listen! If you listen and think "Gee that sounds annoyingly nasal", then your voice is too nasal. But if you think "That sounds nasal but sounds ok", then your voice is not too nasal. There's a certain level of nasality you need, but too much will sound bad. If you listen to Rihanna, she is quite nasal but she still sounds good.

Bob Dylan is someone who is too nasal :) The singer from The Smashing Pumpkins is also nasal but he gets away with it.

Hmmm, on cd Rihanna sounds quite nasal - this is after all the post-recording editing. When you watch her live videos, on youtube, her nasality is on a whole different level. It's overpowering.
btherl: Seems like you're too focused on the technicalities until there's almost no feeling in your singing

Thanks for the feedback!

I see what you mean about Rihanna's live performances. But she's still more famous than any of us here :)

Ok Brian, I have to admit my comments are too mean. You're a nice guy, and I have nothing against you though. I'll try to give constructive view.

Firstly, you've wasted your money, time and effort doing with SLS. You have to realise that all that crap doesn't work for you. Secondly, not all those theories you worship works for everyone. Thirdly, the only thing good that you've gain is your confident. But, overly confident will give you a dead spot.

Ok, here's my 'theory' about singing. Actually I believe only practicality but since it's for learning purpose here goes. Singing is setting yourself free....let go you voice. Have that feeling while singing. Sing into the music not sing for the music. Ok, you can sing but don't hold back you voice. You're just holding too much. It's ok to imitate singers as most of us do. But after a while, you'd like to sing some tunes your way. That's what made you original.

Hi David,

Thanks for the more detailed reply. I do understand your theory of singing. It just doesn't work for me, that's all. I've tried "that crap" already, for many years, and it was a total waste of time for me.

Why do I take SLS lessons? Because it does work for me. I realize that casual listeners usually don't notice the difference, but I do. I still ask for feedback here just to see how I'm going from a casual listener point of view. After all, it's the casual listener who I sing for, not for myself or my teacher.

Brian

Sorry, I forgot to reply to the other part of your feedback. I do realize I sound like I am "holding back". That's something I am still working on. Thanks for pointing it out!

And I have nothing against you either.. I think we are just destined to have heated arguments over the internet :) I don't mind having the arguments as long as things don't get too personal.
