Playing unprepared

What must one look out for when playing unprepared. I'm sure you can't just anyhow whack without following the rules of music?

For example , when I'm playing something impromptu , I noticed that I play too many passing notes which "muffles" the entire melody. Anything else I should look out for when playing impromptu?

Another thing is if I play choose to play in particular scale , how can I incorperate the use of modes in my playing?

Suppose if I play in G Major (F#) and I hit the D key. Can I choose to play a D dorian instead or when I hit a G key , can I choose to play a G mexolydian instead? Because both D dorian and G mexolydian does not have an F# but a F instead?

I posted this up on the OM before...

After listening to it over a few times , I noticed that I tend to play too many passing notes that kinda makes the melody "muffled"

This was recorded before I found out that I could actually make use of modes....

I also feel that it sounds kinda empty in a sense that it does not really sound that jazzy , could it be because of the absence of modes?
