pickup springs

Hi all!

I am currently installing a replacement pickup on my guitar. I did the soldering and rewiring but I'm stumped when it comes to the pickup spring installation!

I know the spring comes between the bottom of the pickguard and the pickup cover but i've a very hard time trying to get the spring to stay in place while I turn the screw in. Everytime I get the spring in between the pickup cover and the pickguard, it springs out when I try to compress the pickup towards the pickguard. Is there any technique for installing the spring?

Hope I make sense here and thanks for the help!

hmm..me and thor666 encounter the same problem when he trying to help me install my pu(thanks bro!) we end up trying this method..dunno izzit the correct way of doing it but..works for us

firstly, screw one side of the pu without putting the spring, let it hold the pu there.

after that, screw the other side in with the spring, and after its done, remove the screw without the spring, put back the spring and screw it in again.

maybe we have four hands..thats why its possible. you can give it a try. hope it helps

hehe np. i'm still stumped as how to fix the springs thou.

was thinking clipping away part of the springs might help. there's too much spring anyway.

PinkSpid3r - how is the Super Distortion doing for you? good i hope?

yeap yeap..doing great for me..hee..maybe got time let u hear hear my tone

any experts wanna tell us hw to fix the springs for pickups?

Ok, I used to have this problem and i've figured out the "proper" way of installing that pesky spring and after confirmation from the techs at SeymourDuncan, this should be the way its done.

Since the spring keeps ejecting out, I slide the screw into the mounting hole on the top of the pickguard first. Thereafter, I insert the spring through the screw from below. That only leaves with a bit of compression before the pickup cover touches the bottom part of the screw. With one hand, compress and hold the cover in alignment to the screw and with the other hand, turn the screw in slightly. After turning the screw into the pickup cover, the spring is locked in place. That way, the spring can't go anywhere because its in the mounting screw.

Don't screw it in yet! Do the other side of the pickup then screw up to height for both sides.

There ya go..

Erm i think that's what PinkSpid3r and I did. the spring is just too long?

cos the spring is like 5/4 times of the screw when it's on the pickguard, and it doesn't compress easily. pretty fustrating part of installing the pickups...

yeap yeap..its easy to compress the spring, but to hold it and screw in is really hard..or is there some equipment u can use to hold the spring?
