how does the position of the pickups affect tone?

any of u guys got links on this topic or cud just be kind enuff to giv ur own review? like some good webbies or a smiliar thread to this? would appreciate that (duncan's webbie doesnt seem to answer my question)

thanks

p.s. would hot rails be better in the brige or neck position for strats when doing lead work?

Take your guitar.
Strum it acoustically.

Strum nearer to your bridge.

Strum nearer to your neck.

Thats the difference actually.

So you can select your neck pup, and it would sound like you are playing at that neck pup area, even when you pick near the bridge.

There's no "go to lead" pup, its preference.

hmm? haha go ahead flame if u want, as long as i learn something beneficial about my topic i dont mind

Most pick-up manufactures (best advice since they make em) usually suggest pu position for each type ...go ..>> browse >> have a look !!

...come back and share if you have learnt something new !!!

"how does the position of the pickups affect tone? " i believe Shred made it clear ...try strumming an acoustic at diff position ...

go read here

more here

....see you a week later ...got exam !!

Neck more warm and smooth, bridge more trebly and cutting. No hard and fast rules, I prefer using my neck pickup on my strat for leads but I prefer using the bridge for my humbucker guitar.

Something interesting for you to research on would be how different sounding would a neck pup (take a single coil for example) on a 21/22 fret guitar and a 24 fret guitar be?

erm. the harmonic node shit really works. as in having a pickup inside or outside the harmonic node makes a big difference. but its subjective to which one u like. for me i like the pickup in the harmonic node so no 24 fretters for me. gimme a strat anyday.

there is a big different in the neck pup tone, on a 24 fretter and a 22 fretter. BIG difference.

Mainly, 24 fretters have a tighter neck tone, less hollow (or less tubular) and its "better" for shred.

21/22 fretters have that classic neck tone. Which. Can mud out. But it sounds fab. Especially with a good wah.

I'd acknowledge the 22fret neck tone is better, more tasty, but its not as practical as the tight tone a 24fret neck tone offers.

I don't deny what you say penta-tonic, but i like to put my finger down when I can... and try to give both sides of the coin (usually downright bias-ed  ) if possible, rather than keep giving the, "oh, its up to you really." comment, which might not prove useful to a newcommer. Sometimes, its nice to point out certain ideas/facts/observations/personal quirks so others can latch onto something and learn from that.

Do note, its really... still a personal thing, lots of "I" and lots of "me" there. :P

ahaha. but i guess i mentioned that cos nowadays pple take on influences too much without even having tried the product themselves and if left unchecked becomes a dependence. but oh well y do i care so much ahaha.

strings at rest, the harmonic node lies above the neck pickup. fret the string, lets say the 5th fret, and the harmonic node moves down accordingly.

isnt this how it should be in theory? i still dont get how the node theory would work.

Hey... I'm just a cow who likes to play around with metal strings on pieces of wood! =) No funky, "I get ALL my tone from a ds1 straight to pc!" kind of urban legends here.

But you have a point here.

While my views differ from yours, I appreciate your point of view. From my understanding, those who are truely into the art of guitar-ing, will do their homework. So, perhaps, lets those who bother, bother, and those who don't, well, plagarise.
