Hey pple , i have been posting ads lookin for a 2nd hand boss pedal and some of the offers i got a quite gd but the only thing tat bothers me are tat the pedals the people are sellin me are made in taiwan. I am not sure but whats the difference between the pedals made in taiwan and those made in japan.Does it affect the pedals's quality and the sound produced or is there not much difference at all. Please give me advice. thanks.

Boss moved all their production to Taiwan long ago. If you have a Japan made one, it's a very old one.

Some people say the Japan ones sound better. Especially for certain pedals (like the DS-1)

But some people say its the same.

So up to you. Construction of both is sturdy.

There might be a bit of a difference but its barely noticable. Ark had an old DS-1 while our bassist had a newer DS-1. There was a very slight difference. YOu had to listen quite hard to it to notice it.

There might be a diff in it but i don't think its worth the price that some ppl are asking for their old japan pedals.

And ya, the boss pedals are built to last, u must have an elephant foot to break one.

Hmmm... I think... you have to let your ears decide.

what ciel21 says is true, the difference is subtle but sometimes, that subtle difference is what makes it that much better...

I'm not saying the MIJ ones are killer or what, but its a matter of taste.

The IC chips are different. The older ones sound generally better. The differences is more evident is analog pedals such as the DM2 etc. Even the older dd3 sounded better.

The Japanese and Taiwanese 1st issue (Black Label) made DS1 came with a different chip which had less gain and is slightly noisier when compared to the modern Taiwanese made ones (Silver label).

The general opinion about Japanese made pedals being all superior isn't entirely true. I will explain. Let's say you want a DS1 "Ultra" which has a big jack up on the Bass and Low Mids and a higher gain factor and overall volume. I would highly recommend the modern Taiwanese made pedals with the 5223 chip as it has the ability to get all the above mentioned sounding tighter and with less noise when compared to the Japanese ones.

Now let's say you want to use the DS1 "See Eye MOd" or "Switchblade"(my own custom design) with a more subtle use of the Drive but want to max out on the level and use the setting to push a tube amp for a classic Blues Rock type of Lead Tone then I would suggest hunting down either a Japanese or Taiwanese 1st issue.

Hope this has been helpful
