Pedal recommendations

hey everyone. im just thinking of getting a distortion pedal. preferably an analog one. im trying to nail a heavy sound. im not an overdrive fan but more like a petrucci or opeth kinda sound. i noe its gotta do more with de amp type but granted my financial status ill haf to stick with watever amps there r at gigs so i was wondering IF a pedal could get me wat i wanted. also im kinda on a tight budget of 180. any recommendations? thanks a bunch. :D

there's a pedal i can recommend you..might not be too popular but that's the whole idea  it's AMT fatal tube.. I was looking for a pedal with a 3 band eq as you know nowadays single dist pedals mostly come with two..it's also got drive and gain knobs, giving you a whole range of tones from overdrive to great sweet distorted tones..right now i'm playing some petrucci..i can nail a tone close to him..i can play ac/dc..iron maiden..modern rock distortion..watered-down metal..bluesy songs...it's great...i just love it's lead tone...go try it out but davis ran out of it...wakemeup has one piece left i think..

ahaha yeah ive thot of de sansamp gt2 b4. but its outta my budget n also its kinda noisy n can only produce very gd rhythm tone. when it comes to lead there isnt de slightest hint of compression. ahaha but den again im damn fussy. haha thanks for ur time. ah jem ive heard abt de amt pedals. im going down to davis tml to take a look n if de uncles in a gd mood den ill press my luck n try it. :D

lol..he's seldom around nowadays..you just might get lucky...anyway the pedal is really quiet even at max gain...if u need some vol just need to turn down a little drive and the hiss will go away..for that i think it's an excellent pedal..

the amt of course...there's even a gt2 clone called AMT distation i think..if you look at the design and knobs you'll recognise it instantly..except it's cheaper i think..

ahaha. yep saw it on davis' website. kinda funny how pple go to de extent of even finishing pedals in similar style. goodie goodie. i look forward to trying it out. cos ive tried out a few pedals. one of them being a rat. not really bad but its always damn harsh. will need a super warm amp to go with it so if im stuck with a solid state i might as well be scratching my nails on a board. probs with most other pedals is de lack of gain. i just love gain. de more de merrier. one of de worst pedals ive tried is de visual sound jh. it spoilt within 2 weeks. damn muddy on dist but overdrive is de fattest n warmest ive heard so far..

yeah i wanted to try it out too cos of versatility..but no money..so tried out the fatal tube...i was really surprised with it's tone when i tried it..it was really different..warm..almost tube like at times..picking dynamics are very pronounced..it wails and screams and reacts well to your picking..

Pettrucci sound is very very very heavy and comes from mesa boogies...

So i think if you want a cheap and good one, can try Metal Zone.

metal zone...i think more for thrash rhythm work la...for leads sounds too thin and harsh...AMTs at davis, no tubes around 120 like that, pedals with tubes around 250..

oh and part of petrucci's heavy sound come from his use of heavy gauge string..like ernie ball not so slinky gauge..tuned to C standard or something..or he use 7 string..

how about his lead sounds. is that lots of compression i hear? yeah dats de prob. most pedals cant craft de sound of a mesa boogie. most pple are into de 'overdrive bandwagon' or de terribly harsh distortion but none in between. n davis doesnt haf any fatal tube pedals. so sad. how? any other options? btw is de boss compression sustainer a gd pedal?

like i mentioned above..wmum has one fatal tube left last time i went..dunno if still got...i believe that nothing can come close to a boogie but a boogie itself..not even the boogie pedals like triaxis..a good way to start i think would be to get a not too ex tube combo, run a good OD pedal like tubescreamer thru it, should be able to get a nice warm tone with distinct picking dynamics, but of course can't get so close to petrucci sound la..had CS-3 at one point, think the compression is better for dist tone than clean tone, while i think my DOD milkbox is better for clean than distorted tone..haha..

ahaha thanks. ok now suddenly im scared of de boss compression sustainer. but anyway i dun believe in artificial sustains. just haf de pickups riding down low away from de strings n good fretting work will juice out a gd amount of sustain frm any guitar.

well. argh. i need more pedal recommendations den i haf at least a reason to go down to shops to try. :D :D

im only looking for distortion units. wish i had more cash den i could afford more fx to sculpt my sound. well ok im gonna ask for sum advice on a certain few pedals n hope u guys can gimme sum insight on them

- boss metal zone
- line6 uber metal
- marshall jackhammer

metal zone can be harsh sounding, but i think it's pretty ok for thrash rhythm work..line6 uber metal has more options such as scoop and a handy noise gate, but you should pop by citymusic to give it a test run..as for marshall jackhammer, it's pretty ordinary i think..a DS-1 kicks it rear anyday, but let your ears be the judge..can try at davis..
