P100's replacement pickups.

A friend has come into possession of a slightly older Tokai hummingbird with P100's. We have no clue how the P100's came there, but they're stacked coils, so not P90's.

Now the P90's on my Gibson sound quite a bit more punchy and raw, and quite a bit hotter, so he wants some P90's in the Tokai. What would you recommend for that raw P90 tone, full of bite and growl, nothing mushy? Should we go with Gibson originals? Seymour duncan? DiMarzios? Almost none of the P90's have sound clips on the websites. Anyone played with these?

dude p100s are p90 sized just that they are stacked. duncans seem to be cheap and they sound pretty decent.

unless you wanan go upmarket with some of the boutique makers.

this dude comes to mind.

try searching tgp for ideas they have tons of threads talking abt p90s.

Thanks Malcolm. I'm inspiring a round of P90 gas in many of my friends, who I suspect may come to you one day. Do you play the Lollars?

+1 to that. i'm a happy HD owner... soon to be HD'd twice over with my incoming Super 90 & Vintage + tele pups. Bought the Z-90s for my '91 SG and they fully transformed that guitar - now instead of being my backup guitar its my number 1. and i'd tried it with a whole gaggle of pups, without much success or hope. go figure. its pricey but it lives up to the hype and more.

Hey milkmesto, I heard good stuff about your Z-90s from "you know who";) Cool pickup :P

To sepultura, no experience with the Lollars but they're highly raved at most on-line forums. I did play a Gibson Les Paul loaded with Fralins P-90s and they're a definite improvement over the stock Gibson P-90s.

There's lotsa raves for Wolfetone P-90s in recents months too.

i'm currently having the p-90 itch but i got that covered with my Phat Cat...

as for Duncan p-90s, the HOT model is just as it says- hot. gets hotter with more drive but you have to bear with more noise.

Do you have HD pickups on your axe? We don't mind spending the money if it rocks.

I love P90. Raw on bridge, sweet and bluesy on the neck.

I used HD Z-90 before (after 2 months of waiting list) on semi hollow guitar, great sounding. But they don't sound like P90 sound that I have in mind. Now i'm using Pete Biltoft's humbucker size P90. It's closer to P90 tone, IMHO. And these pickups come with swapable magnet.

Maybe I'll try Lollar soon in my other guitar.

Well, my buddy picked up some DiMarzios (after all that searching .. they did sound great, though), and I, like a fool, succumbed and got some Lollars for my Gibson. Haven't installed them yet, but did a small photo shoot. The Lollars ooze class from every metaphorical pore.
