Does anyone here got experience bringing guitars overseas? What type u bring go, electric or acoustic? If electric what about the amp?

Nope... but thanks for asking... in fact my qsn is bringing guitar out of singapore...

haha... I would if only I got money... wanted to have either a fender strat or tele... esp aerodyne...

where are you going and why do you want to bring your guitar along?

I am going for overseas attachment to shanghai for 6 mths... so to ease boredom I thought of bringing the guitar along... so before I make a decision might as well consult the multitudes of talent lurking in here.

maybe you can buy a new one there!

if i were given the opportunity to stay in shanghai for 6 months, i will try to learn more about their culture, music and places. see, when you come back to singapore, you will have the rest of your life to play with the guitar. but you only have that 6 months in china.

I don't even know any music stores there or what they sell. I don't wanna get some guitar that I will regret buying and I think the prices there for guitar ain't cheap... all this without even considering an amp. Or maybe buy an acoustic guitar there or get a Kapok guitar here and bring there?

Even if I got one there, how to bring it back? must pay tax?

a singaporean luthier has a store in shanghai i think . malcom tan.

i ve heard shanghai has a very happening blues scene.

Hmmm....are you bringing an electric or acoustic guitar....I brought my electric, used the ibanez hardcase that came with it and checked it into cargo.....I didn't seem to have any problems. As for the amp, I bought myself a Roland's Cube 30 and put that into cargo.....it did exceed the given weight slightly, but I manged to put it through.

But exceed the weight allowed must pay extra right? moreover won't putting guitar in cargo be unsafe? can hand carry in?

I thought of bringing electric... and buy a small 2 or 4 watts amp like marshall ms2 or ms4...

I brought my elec from Aust and to Aust.

I used a soft bag and wrapped the neck up in clothes and added more clothes as padding to the body and it wwas fine... although I packed my amp into a boxed which was tight and secure and when I landed in S'pore, my amp was broken so be careful on how you carry your amp.

whoa... so dangerous man... lucky I got a strat copy to take the risk... haha... as for amp I think I will get the small typeMS-2 or MS-4 and put in bag... so I think won't be a prob...

Thanks for the input guys

if ur using a gig bag, maybe u can ask the air stewardess kindly to put it in a closet for hanging coats!

haha... nice one tany...

I was thinking maybe I should go get a cheap acoustic and bring over so no need to buy small amp and won't have to face heartache if guitar got damaged...

nowadays they might not let you bring onboard. skb cases can handle check in but epi cases cannot, my pickup selector snapped off when i cheked mine in

6 mths!... of course u have to bring your guitar along my fren!... 6 mths is a long time man... just carry a softcase with pocket enough to put those tiny marshall pocket amp is enough... at least that's what i do.

aside fr this, i can update u on the guitar shops in shanghai next mth if u want, since by the one of my shanghainese mate will be back by then

Whoa thanks stillwater... sure man... would really appreciate it... cos by then I about to go to shanghai...

oh btw when i took my new LP copy to australia a few weeks ago, I just put my guitar in the overhead compartment and it was fine.

thats the easiest way to carry a guitar.
