maybe you can buy a new one there!

if i were given the opportunity to stay in shanghai for 6 months, i will try to learn more about their culture, music and places. see, when you come back to singapore, you will have the rest of your life to play with the guitar. but you only have that 6 months in china.

i second this
i went away also for several months because of job
i thought i couldn't live without my guitar, so i brought it along
but in the end my guitar was just collecting dust there as there were so many things other than guitar..so think about it 8)

oh btw when i took my new LP copy to australia a few weeks ago, I just put my guitar in the overhead compartment and it was fine.

thats the easiest way to carry a guitar.

it can actually fit in? :?

Put it in the cargo hold if you're going to bring it, 'cos the airlines can be quite anal about what you can bring into the cabin. I've got a friend who just came back from Shanghai and he tells me guitar shops selling quality guitars are hard to come by; most shops stock cheap Chinese copys.

I've transported my guitar in and out of the country lots of times, here's what you do.

Loosen the guitar strings so that it's very slack because we don't want excess tension when the strings and wood shrink due to temperature change in the cargo hold. When you put your guitar in your case, make sure it can't move around when case is closed. If it does, fill up the empty space with cloth or a t-shirt so that the guitar won't be banged around in the hardcase. Close the lid and get gaffer tape or duct tape and seal the lid of the case to minimise air going into the case. Make sure it's sealed tight. The guitar should be able to handle extreme temp changes but make sure you let it warm up to the climate slowly by leaving it in the open case until its temperature returns to normal, maybe overnight.

When you check in at the airport, tell the person at the counter that you want to put your guitar in as a fragile item. The guitar will be given a fragile tag and put into a cargo cage with other fragile baggage so that it's doesn't get crushed by other bags.

You can also consider buying a unit like the Korg Pandora or Zoom personal effects unit which have amp models and effects so you can practice thru headphones or run the output to an amp if you go out and jam.

City music stocks them and they go for $200-$300.

Hope this helps.
