Firstly, this piece of music is a very raw version. So don't expect too good results from it. I did it to:

1. Test my external USB hard drive for audio recording.
2. To show that you can make music with only one notebook and keyboard with no other external musical hardware
3. Try "speed sequencing" - did this in about 2+ hours. Didn't want to spend too much time for testing my harddrive and recording system. It is therefore a very quick and dirty composition.
4. Always wanted to try out Irish music after performing with one of my friends (he played the violin and we played Irish music) - so orchestration tend to be simpler concentrating on winds (mainly tin whistle) and strings melody in myxolydian mode.

Didn't use too good reverb either - used the built in reverb in Gigastudio which is not a good one. I usually use the reverb in Logic but I want to finish this quickly so didn't do much mixdown - no eq etc. Just a template reverb.

So here it is: my version of "River Dance" music with stomps. File will expire in 1 week. Criticisms welcomed!

Wah like real lah...

At first glance would tot you recorded it straight off some play or something lor. I wish i was a keyboard guy... You can do wonders with keys and a computer.

not bad whenever i think of anything irish whether irish pubs , irish culture or irish music i always think of saint patrick and duckweeds(opps...i mean shamrocks)


overall i would say dat u did a fairly good job on this *thumbs up*
maybe u could improve on ur song by adding a few bag pipes cause i doubt i heard any bag pipes right? it would certainly make ur song more interesting and at the same time more irish of course :lol:

Thanks for the comments. Well, no bagpipes because I don't have any bagpipes samples. Even if I have the samples, I probably will not add it - music already too cluttered for Irish. But you're right - bagpipes gives that Irish feeling. So would an uilleann pipe, which I would love to have in my sample collection. I would have used a fiddle instead of of full violin section but I don't have a good fiddle sample - first rule in sequencing: if sample is bad, don't use it.

If you're refering to the recording you did, sorry but I'm not a recording person. I'm more of a writing guy. Other's will have more constructive comments than me. But keep it up!

the hand drum solo in the middle.. how'd you record that? played it in on the keys? at the actual tempo?

Not hand drum! It's stomps! Supposed to be simulating the tap dancing in River Dance. Looks like the actual samples aren't realistic enough, even though their were real recordings of stomps on stage.

And yes, they were played on the keys at a slower tempo then sped up to 180bpm. Originally I wanted the music to be about 210 bpm, but I didn't think the dancers can tap dance at that speed!

yeah, that's what i thought at first, stomps. but then they lacked the attack of a foot stamping on a floor. i was thinking along the lines of stomping on a typical hollow stage floor so there is quite a bit of, uh, i don't know how to describe it, "treble sound". also lacked the depth and a bit of boominess. this sample sounded just muffled and all and reminded me of the hand drum that caroline corr plays.

Yes, I think the stage was pretty hollow. Oh well, it is a free stomp sample - can't expect too much! I'm waiting for another free sample that will be up soon in a few weeks for Gigastudio. Then maybe I'll change it and see if it improves. Stomps samples are not easy to find!

Actually, could have eq the stomps a bit. Anyway, this is a test - so no time to mix it carefully. Maybe next time...
