OFFICIAL- Show us your kits thread!

I noticed you said I am and NOT I was :). Your current gear/kit dont seem to far off from that.

Unlike me - I had nothing when I was 28 and now pushing 40, I only have a cheapo set and still bargaining/haggling for better (read: cheaper) prices at the drums buy-sell forums.

You guys are some lucky bunch :)

Swee Lee sales at Sims Drive this Sat :)

some incredible drum kits right there... the room really takes the cake... unclenabe... you must be in heaven playing there

unclenabe> the old picture of your room/kit looks familiar... i remember seeing this guy who was a big portnoy fan and wanted to get the starclassic maple (and later inquired about the starclassic mirage) u happen to be the same guy?

atomic> i've heard a lot about the reference kits. apparently they hand pick a blend of premium woods for each shell !!! if u've some recordings of the sound, do post for us to drool even more...

Spot on Mate! That's me. But i've finally settled for the starclassic maple since it's rather hard to get my hands on the mirage out of USA.

yayy !!! so nice to "meet up again" in cyberspace

am glad you're passion is still going strong!.... some drummers i got to know from internet have moved on over the years... thats life i guess

yup its tough, i tried to get the mirage too.. in the end, the risk of shipping problems made me give up. add to the fact i was supposed to pay 5k+ and wait up to 3 months for something which one e-tailer said "not guaranteed they can fulfill the order but they will check once i submit an order" ...

softwaremaker: Gear is cool but more amazing is how you can make a cheapo drumset sounds good......I believe in 90% skill and 10% gear...

So don't be affected by all this power GEAR...hehehe...maybe you are not..but try not think like that...hehehe

An example: My band's drummer is in his 40s and don't own any drumset or cymbals but he plays real good...

Thanks dude - I am not affected. My point is that some guys are luckier than the others so we have to be contented with what we have.

I have an old Pearl Forum that I stuck with over the years and I have changed the skins on it as well to make it sound better. For the skins, I even bought "used" remo weatherking pinstripes because the new ones are over my budget :) I bought a 10", 12" and a 14" used Remo weatherking pinstripes skins for less than SGD20.00 AND I thought it still sounded good. :)

Pearl Export 12" 14" 20", Linko 16". Don't really use the 16". It's just waiting to be recovered and converted into a bass drum.

Pearl Maple Free Floater 14"x7.5"

Jeepers: Your Pearl Snare looks like a killer. May I know what is the price of one of those 7.5" and where did you get it from ? Also - is that a special snare stand to hold that as well ? Would you be able to describe the sound characteristics of that snare ?

Would you be willing to sell that 16" Tom ? It does look interesting.

One question for the drummers:
If you have to have 4 toms - would you go for a 8" or a 16" one ? Subjective question that really depends on the music you play, etc but I am interested in some insights.

@Softwaremaker: I would have said 16" right away in the past, but now that I know how horrible positioning can get, I'll definitely say 8". Well... subjective! I would still say 16" if you're using it for live shows in large venues, and also the boomyness is quite nice in general. BUT! Large floor toms take up quite a lot of space, the 8" can be easily added on to an existing 5-piece drumset without much problem.

@Jeepers: omg <3 that snare.

It is killer. Nice tuning range.

I bought it from b3nn right here on SOFT for $480. A steal, if you ask me. This FF is from the '90s, hence the hexagonal lugs. And it's an MIJ.

With regards to the snare stand, it's the stock stand that came with the Export.

I'm not good with describing sounds of gear, but to me, it's nice and fat. I tuned it up fairly high and the snares are slightly loose. I've got Evans G1 heads on it, coated batter and clear reso.

The 16" tom is not for sale, it's for a little project. I got a really old trashed up kit from church and it's gonna be a pre-NS project. Gonna refinish it and do it up into a bop kit. 10" RT 13" FT 16" BD.

CoR: Ha, would you like to give it a test drive some time? Pity I already have a one-ply maple, if not that Philharmonic would've been mine.

Speaking of fat and deep snares - Swee Lee @ Sims has a real phat one 14" x 7.5"/8" on display - The Pearl Vinnie Paul Snare Drum Snakeskin: http://drums-percussion.musiciansfr...-Drum?sku=444808&CJAID=10381297&CJPID=2179950

Yes, it is on display and its listed at SGD695.00, which means you should be able to get it < SGD300.00 tomorrow, if you are lucky enuf to get it at 60% off

Jeepers: Hmm one day! But gonna be very busy over the next few weeks and then NS already.
Softwaremaker: It's been there for pretty long I think, I wonder if someone will get it this time. But since VP cancelled his endorsement, better get it before pearl stops manufacturing it!

You can try your luck with the PEACE Acrylic drum kit without ANY SEAMS at all, i've seen the mirage up and close and there are single seams on all their shells. I'm quite appalled with their quality. By the way you can get a PEACE 5 piece all acrylic kit in singapore for about $4K.. Cheaper than forking out $7K for a Tama Starclassic Mirage in my humble opinion....

Update on setup!

Updated setup on cymbals ;) (Not shown in picture is 16" floor tom)

Decided to mount my 8" tom back for my Sonor kit as well! In a different manner.. Think Marco...

hey, i've got no kit, but i just got to ask aytes. how much can a kit cost??
i'm looking at those music shops n all, stuff cost like what, 1k upwards man...
i think the only time i would even get a drumkit is like....only when i start full-time work after graduating...once-in-a-lifetime thing.

Try Ranking Sports or Swee Lee @ Bras Basah Complex, they do sell a few that are less than 1k for the full set.
If you want even more budget kits like the one I currently own, look out at the Buy/Sell forums, I got mine at 160 for a full kit at good working condition, just need to clean the metal areas and prolly replace the heads and a new shiny kit at home.

Well, I have yet to replace them since the heads are still in pretty good condition IMO. Sounds good to me. Anyways, even if i DO replace the heads, I'd most likely replace the snare only.

Now I'm saving up, computer first before I head on to getting double pedals and proper cymbals (running on stocks now lol)
