NPD: Mini expression controller for M9

For all the kaypohs that were wondering, this is the pedal that I got tyzjames to build, a mini expression controller for my M9.

As you may know, the Line 6 M9 allows you to use up to 2 expression pedals to control any parameter/knob on any of the effects. One of my favourite tricks is to use the expression pedal to turn one preset into two. For example, using the Tube Drive model, I set the gain low and volume high for a clean boost, and then assign the exp pedal to increase gain while lowering volume, to get an overdrive sound while maintaining the overall level.

While this is useful, I'm too lazy to carry an expression pedal, much less two of them. So based on the ideas in this Line 6 forum thread, I decided to improve on the design.

The controller contains 2 independent "expression pedals", with 2 outputs so you can assign them separately on the M9. The left side is the basic design, only switching between "heel" and "toe" positions. Good for creating pairs of presets as I mentioned above. The right side has a pot instead of the fixed 10k ohm resistor. The benefit of this is you can assign multiple parameters on the M9 to the single knob on the controller, so you can achieve your crazy yet controlled oscillating delays by moving your foot and looking cool, instead of bending down and looking like a mad scientist tweaking 5 knobs with your hands.

Best of all, it's in a tiny EP Booster-sized enclosure and will easily fit at the front of your pedalboard.

All in all I'm very happy with it and highly recommend all M9/M13 users to consider adding one to your setup. Huge thanks to tyzjames / Morningstar Custom Pedals.

This is the main reason why I didn't wanna get an M9. The controllers were intriguing on the Line 6 forums but sourcing for one proved impossible. To have them so close at hand is making me re-consider an M9 lol

Just want to share, this was my original sketch, which tyzjames miraculously squeezed into the enclosure:

This is an alternative idea I had:

This one would use the typical "mini tap tempo" enclosure (2"x2"x1"), but mounted sideways. You would need to velcro both the bottom and the side to make it stable as it has a very small footprint, my idea was to velcro it to the right side of the M9 itself.

Hmm interesting, but don't thhink you'll be able to fit both the pot and the footswitch in that tiny enclosure though. But if you make it an inch wider, that will work!

As a matter of fact I mentioned that thread in my first post. I only improved upon the design.

Also, I thought NPD stood for new pedal day?

Yeah you did. Didn't spot that. How do you embed links into your words on Soft btw?

Yeah NPD is New Pedal Day. Just lazy to type pedal on my iPhone so I typed NPD.

How do you embed links into your words on Soft btw?

The syntax is
Code:
[ url = http://google.com ] This sentence links to Google [ / url ]
Without any spaces inside the square brackets

Dunno why the rich-text editor disappeared, suddenly everyone don't know how to post links or pictures?
