Hey peeps,

Need some advice here. I'm a total noob and I'm planning to first get an electric guitar than see how it goes.

How should I go about learning? I was considering self-learning, through books and the internet. But I know some people think lessons are the way to go.

Need advice from you veterans!

u have any particular style to focus on? if u r self learning its gonna be easy if u know what style u want n zoom in because resources r everywhere...

btw, whats ur budget for a electric guitar? i suppose u gonna need otehr things like amps, tuner, etc?

yeah man, there must be something to spur u to learn guitar.. like say u like particular genre of music, or certain idol u have, or jus simply wanna woo girls.. haha..

hahhaa..for me..

i started the guitar cos..

i tried expressing my feelings in writing..

but i juz cant capture the emotion..

i tried drawing..

but i cant draw for fark..

and i was sure tt i cud do so on the guitar..

and i was wrong..

tts y i gave up.

yo thanks for the replies.

the guitar hero that comes to mind for me would be.... graham coxon. genius. yeah.. as for genres, i listen to so much, but yeah more into indie rock/ garage rock/ blues rock..

is self-learning easy? feel like it'll be quite tough going.

budget wise for an electric guitar, i've got some savings aside so i guess anything up to $1500.

how should i get started?

lol how I wish I have $1500 to dispense on guitar..

As I've read in the forum, this money can get you a good Stratocaster.. a versatile guitar from blues to rock..

Other guitars I'm not so sure... let other pros continue

Maybe one other thing that can really spur your interest in guitar playing is by hanging out with guitarists.

You can exchange ideas.
Correct each others techniques.
Expand your repretoire (songs that you can play) by 'copying' what you friends are playing.
Ask questions and clear your doubts much quicker. If you didn't have your guitarists friends to ask, you may end up frustrated and lose interest in guitar altogether.
Show off!

etc etc

Anyway, if you don't have guitarists friends to hang out, you can always come here! So no worries!

how old are u dafy? considering ur a noob with a $1500 budget...

i'm 24, so i've got some savings from previous part-time jobs here and there. i mean i guess i'd want to get a good guitar that i would be happy keeping for years to come, but ideally i don't wanna blow my entire budget on it!

so would you guys suggest self-learning or perhaps taking up lessons (say at SOMA?)?

any recommendations/contacts for guitar teachers/lessons?

Remember not to get any cheap amp. There's a lot mentioned on good amps on this website which you can search.

The best thing you can do is hook up with a friend who plays guitar and ask him about it.

Cheers for all the advice.

Unfortunately, none of my friends are into guitar at all (or music all that much for that matter!)

Shucks.

So where's a good place to start self-learning? Online? Can suggest some places/sites?

i tink u can get a rather decent guitar with that budget... try going to guitar77 to have a feel of different guitars...a MIJ Fender is in that rnge, can get a decent amp like Behringer also if u r into rock, got many other brands available, take ur time to choose b4 u buy :)

maybe get a guitarist friend to accompany u to give some advise n opinions...

for rock, i tink its not very difficult to learn the basics urself...

maybe u can start with:
1) Root 5 and 6 Power Chords (only learn 2 shapes can play 20+ chords just by moving around)
2) Palm Muting (to give ur power chords a chunky rock sound)
3) Progressions - try I-IV-V progressions with 1 n 2 (e.g G-C-D)
4) Try some Songs - alot of song uses just a few of those power. GEt the chords of ur favorite rock songs n play them with power chords
5) Learn a Basic Pentatonic Scale (and Major, Minor scale if u can)
6) Play a Chord progression with some lead lines fill
7) Download or record some backing tracks
8) Jam with the Pentatonic scale

hmm...that should keep u busy for a few months...just a suggestion :)

for your stuff, get a fender strat. head down to G77 or Davis, try the MIJ fenders, would cost you 900-1k. with the excess 500-600, get a decent amp. the cube 30 would be a nice buy.

wow, subversion leading the guitar testout! Cool man \m/ !
(Can i come too? although not getting any stuff yet )

Cheers for all the advice!

But getting a guitar is quite an investment, so I'm gonna take some more time to mull over it...

Sometimes you have to weigh it up between your dreams, and your talent?

ask yourself man. do you really, really want to learn? for example, all i knew about the bass guitar last december was EADG and i just went ahead and got me a bass and started my lessons. i have made big progress so far. i started out with a cheapo bass and have sold it (for a J&D). so, make use of the advantage you have with a starting "capital" of $1500.
