Nguyen Tuong Van case heats up.

no, in this case I believe that we should be mature enough to accept the media and discern right from wrong ourselves.

hey guys i came across a few singaporean freedom blogs recently and saw the other side of the story. we have been so conditioned to be fed what to think by our biased local media. why dont we keep an open mind and see what the other side has to say and make up our own minds. only then would we be able to come up wid truely intelligent and informed conclusions. i'm sure we are good enough for that. =)

If you truly intends readers to make an intelligent decision, why try to influence them with innuedo of biased media conditioning? You could just state "read this" and that would suffice. The media has a social responsibility to report facts, and stay non-partisan. You can fault the media on subjective matters concerning music, food or fashion, but not on objective issues such as law of the land.

HRS: perhaps the point here is to look at the media as having selective reporting. the law is certainly objective, but half-truths are subjective.... tricky.

in any case, i do agree that the freedom blogs can be overstretched and biased as well. which doesn't make for a very good discussion as they would be as bad as selective reporting. Read the blogs with a BIG pinch of salt. You can clearly see how biased they are, to the extent that they seem to be targeting the ruling party rather than individual policies. (Some people actually agree on that.)

I don't think there's a need to censor the links. They are factual in any case, and not anything seditious.

To readers, read both sides, and make your own stand on individual decisions. Think of the reasons for such biased writing and keep a balance. Blindly supporting would be extremely bad.

hmm..just now i met an australian man on the train, he began telling me about wat he thinks about this episode...he kept saying that there shouldnt be something such as a death sentence at all, "40 years in jail is punishment enough" because "i think human life is a sacred thing". He even went on to say that he didn't want the bali bombers executed! "killing them wont make the dead come back to life" and "by sparing their lives, we are sending them a message of peace, so those who were spared can influence other extremists to do things in a peaceful way". Well, i think he doesn't realise that religious extremists operate with a totally different mindset. Anyway, then i asked him, then wont it be unfair to spare nguyen when so many have died before him? He then said again that he thinks the death penalty is not the way to go, "Its happened before, in the US, they've executed wrong people before" and he thinks that Singapore might have wrongly executed a few too, out of the hundreds that have been executed. He also kept saying that singapore's newspapers are extremely one-sided, and "back home, we always get 2 sides to the story", which makes me wonder what we have been missing out on...hmmm...however, he mentioned that the australians are quite evenly split on whether to execute nguyen or not.

tht 400g of heroin could have killed many more ppl and taken many more lives....issit beter for one preson to die or many others?if he was given a jail term,he might not have learnt his lesson and many more lives could have been wasted...on the other hand, issit right for a human to take away the life of another person?what abt family and frens?assuming tht the person was the sole breadwinner of a family with lotsa financial difficulties and drug trafficking was just another way to help his family survive another day, would it be wrong to execute the person?after all, even thogh what he is doing is wrong,he's doing this outta love.....doesn't tht show tht the person has more morals and could be helped rather than just executing the person, without giving a second chance?in my opinion,i think everyone, while on this earth, deserves a secong chance.juz my 2 cents worth.

I'm pretty sure if you smack a guy with 15 years of jail he pretty much would learn his lesson.

+1.

no human reserves the right to take another's one's life.if the criminal is in jail for a long term. he cant possibly be distributing them.

so overall, i second detroit_red on what he states/

whatever the view of singaporeans back home, know this. singapore's global image has taken a severe beating. the press and media in australia casts singapore in a very bad light, and over the long run this might translate into real and practical costs. we didn't have a very good image to start with, and now its becoming worst. the media started digging up on all the past cases where singapore was deemed to be unreasonable, and bloggers not too far off from the age of you and i have been writing very negative things about our totalitarian country. i'm ashamed to say many singaporeans support not only the death penalty, but are outraged that australia protested over the hanging of their own citizen.

to quote an australian, "as long as its not them getting the shit, they don't give two ***** about it"

and i do think it will affect s'poreans living in australia. well, i guess, every govt. have their own kind of thinking.

what's happening to the world...

I was a Prisons Officer for a few years at Changi Prison.I have seen almost all types of convicts during my period of work there.I was also made to work at the Condemn Hall(a hall where deathrow convicts reside) for quite sometime. I left the service because of my own reasonings:

1. They are there for rehabilitation...not to get whacked(General Category inmates).
2. No human has the right to decide to end the life of another human(Inmates with capital punishment imposed on them)

I can feel the pain of the families who pay their visits to their relatives in there especially when it is their last visit.I have just had enough of it I believe.Every human has a right to repent and make good of his/her life in one way or another. Like they say, You can never be good if you were never bad.
This is just my own opinion and is not directed at anyone.Cheers.

whoa. just finished reading all the recent posts and what I have to say is this: valid points everyone. but they've pretty much been brought up in the other 18 pages of the thread! Nguyen's passed away, let's let the topic rest? just my two bits' worth.

and to zer09er: *salutes* tough job and you did it.

Thanks bro....it was never easy to see....

1.A child trying to touch the hand of his/her father(which is quite impossible due to the fact that there is always a barrier like a glass window)who will be dead the morning after. The word"I Love You Papa" still rings in my ears after all these years seriously.

2. A mother who knows she will be seeing the last of her son and when the parting occurs ,she faints like every 10-20 metres of walking.

3. A convict who asks for forgiveness to his family for the misdeeds he has done and the trouble and sorrow he has caused to them.

I as a Prisons Officer had to witness this. Most of the time holding back the tears. I cant ever imagine me in that state .Damn bloody sad world man.

i dont find it surprising that the opposition are making use of this opportunity to hit out on the government, especially when the General Elections are coming "soon"

silencer:
i wouldnt call Singapore totalitarian. Infact, the government do not control us as tightly as economics and capitalism does.
And i'm proud that Singaporeans stood up for their country, not giving in so easily to foreign demands.

People die all the time, there so many people who die during their terminal stages of their diseases, many others die in war, many go off just like that and nobody knows about it. All these people death's are preventable, and they certainly deserve a second chance. But unfortunately the world we live in aint perfect. Not everyone is lucky enough to get a second chance at life even if they deserve it. I hope you guys treasure you lives... Dont do stupid things and hope for a second chance, you might not get it.

Zero9er isnt that avatar from talkingcock.com?
