NGD - Oni 8, a preview...

Seeing how the extended range community is usually very small... I thought to share this with SOFT; my new Oni 8.

I'll be working on providing a thorough review of this instrument with plenty of photos and hopefully, some audio/video clips.

For now, y'all have to be contented with some handphone shots.

Oh, and here's the spec list.

Oni 8

  • Black Acacia body
  • Bocote top and headstock veneer
  • Black Acacia neck with roasted Maple strip
  • Ziricote fretboard, scalloped, flat radius
  • Fanned 25" - 27.35"
  • Graphtech nut
  • 24 stainless steel (Jescar) frets
  • Currently strung with D'Addarios 0.09 - 0.65
  • Oni "single coil" neck and humbucker

Wow! Nice... I like how the lower horn is shaped. Looks like it provides great access to the higher frets. Seriously considering an 8-string myself.

Appreciation of 8 stringer in singapore is pathatic i would say. But yeah your oni 8 is awesome man. Cant wait for your video. I always wanted to collect 1 fanned fretboard. Care to share where you bought this?

Well, when I wanted to pick up 8 string, a well-know guitar fx maker advised me otherwise; he just didn't understand it.

Same for me a few years back. I laughed at the idea.

Bought it from Oni Guitars. Be prepared to wait.

woah, shredcow, how many years have been since the last post! Congrats on the 8 stringers, great looking siol!

heh, so did you manage to convince the efx maker go beyond 6 strings or scare him enough to be a bassist instead

Too long ah... but I do like 7/8 string guitars and wanted to show off here!

I hope I can actually make music with the thing...

Efx maker? I dunno leh, never talk to him about it coz I just went ahead to order this guitar.

heh, since already bought it, even if never make music with it, can plug in geetar to amp, point a fan and blow at it. The swooshing sound heard through the amp prolly be a good representation of musical struggle between guitar and amp when bypassing the playing person in between. In between the turning of the fan direction, will be the moment where one can observe the silent beauty of the instrument being blown and un-blown.

kok talk aside, hows the music side of things been over the last couple years?

@Shredcow - who were the other makers you had considered before deciding to go with Oni, and why? I'm keeping an eye out for a maker for a good 8 string in the future. Currently I have Siggery guitars in mind. Rick Toone is too expensive and I don't quite like the specs on Strandberg's Boden 8.

But before that I will likely get a lower end 8 string first to try out first. Wish SL would bring in some of the new Ibanez 8 strings soon..

I had a Schecter Hellraiser 8, which I modded to bits and then regretfully sold it off for the Oni. You can find a thread on it somewhere I think. It was a great eye opener and the 26.5" scale helps (a little) with the low end tension.

Went with Oni because I found him to be skilful, innovative and practical. He did a 7 string carbon fiber model, came up with a design for curved (as opposed to just fanned) frets and built a prototype, and his guitars use many components that are easily found off-the-shelf.

Strandberg is very cool but I don't like the idea of custom hardware unless that hardware is really hardy; like his locking headstock.

Try Artinger? Chris Letchford did a custom with him and I like the way Artinger did the neck joint.

hey shred, iam halfway through the stuff you posted, rather enjoyable i must say. Love the at times "playful" sounding geetar and that lazy jazzy feel among the delaysss, shimmering harmonics with the spoken words going on

Hehe, one thing for sure, be it 7 or 8 strings, as long theres not too much chuggah chuggah playing, its all good! Too boring to hear that from many strings geetar trying to sonically butt rape via distortion, arrrrrgggggghhhhhasidhafihfihsfiasghsigdhwtfbbq, pain!!

Wah, I am glad you enjoy it!

Though I think the music could be done to fit the lyrics & mood better... think some people comment that it don't fit together well. Maybe my pseudo rock edge too obvious.

To be honest, I cannot do rock/metal one lah. No inner rage = no authentic real original personal rock/metal.

What's up in SOFT nowadays? Any flame wars? Got unobtainium gear reviews not?

what's your opinion on strictly 7 guitar?

Straightforward, proven designs. Seems to be reputable, judging by feedback from forums such as Sevenstring.org.

I suppose you can't go wrong with them.

Oh, I remembered thinking that their headstock design might not be good for hanging guitars?

Never worked or corresponded with them though.
