new kit

hey people. i've just got rid of a 7 year old swing star and i'm looking towards getting a new kit. i know this had probably been discussed to a great extent, but i'm wondering what kit should i get.

Basically the situation is like this, budget about 1.5k, private housing. i prefer darker sounding kits. I'm caught between a Tama Superstar and something from Yamaha. Personally i have tried Yamaha kits, but i don't know what's a good mid-range kit. So if you guys can advise me, tell me whether Tama or Yamaha and which series. THANKS ALOT. (:

im a newbie, but would say that tama superstar kit is worth your money. considering wood (birch+basswood) and hardware quality. I believe its cheaper than yamaha.

not into pearl as much. i would appreciate if there were more experienced players who've tried both kits tell me which sounds better. (:

try pdp... their CX series are about like in the range of USD700 from massmusic prices.. u can check them out at massmusic.net

ranking brings em in and u can check with them to compare prices...

the good thing about pdp is that they use all maple or all birch woods made from DW since they are a subsidiary for them...

they also have solid wood snares and such and their hardware is pretty sturdy i must say...

the good thing is that they use 8-ply maple for such low prices...

just my 2 cents...

im eyeing on them LX series drum set the ocean blue to white fade.

ok with tt budget.. you can maybe even extend you view to mapex? or peace? dun just stick to the mainstream big shots. yup.. like for yamaha no doubt their QC is good in their harware. but their wood are still mahagony for 1.5k.. so think maybe peaceDNa? or try pdp like marc said. its depends on the sound you like too.. like maple is warm?

pdp's ur best bet lah... for a mid-range kit...

they sound really good... the rev from avenged uses pdp for some gigs..

when micked, it sounds wicked.!

Or check out Peace DNA....beats PDP in terms of finish...beats PDP handsdown in terms of the packaged hardware and all drums are 9-ply maple....SGD$1550 only

what's wrong with PDP's hardware?? they have them STM pro mounts like DW...

true pitch tuning lugs like DW..

Their 9000 series hardware is pretty sturdy, for the 8000, ask kanzer...

finish wise, well i must say that the pdp has more range since they have options like Exotics veneer, lacquer, matte and finish-ply... and different finishes have quite a range on it...

Exotics i must say is their highest end of their series compromising kurillian birch, birdseye maple or tiger ash... though they are a lil bit more expensive yeah...

so for threadstarter, my best bet would be trying out them peacedna since it's really a great kit too...

Ps: is the peacedna laquered finish? or plastic wrapping???

alternatively, u can try out PDP with ur budget of around 1k to 1.5k, u can try out the CX or the MX versions of pdp... CX has lots of finishes but MX not so much... add a lil bit more and u can get the lx series...

MX and CX also offers the MXR or CXR where u have the super punchy 24" bass drum....

not forgetting, their F.A.S.T toms... i don't know what that means too lol...

http://www.pacificdrums.com/hardware/hardware.htm

there's a link to the hardware... and undoubtedly, the pdp's hardware looks damn sturdy...

^ marc, alvin didnt say theres anything wrong with pdp hardware...he said peace dna set hardware PACKAGE beats pdp...i think he meant the amount of hardware given?hahaha

Yo! Yup, the pdp hardware that comes packed with the lower ended kits are really not on par with the same budgeted peace dna kits. Come take a look at the hardware that is packed with the dna....man...its really huge and heavy! you don't have to worry about extending the boom arm in full while having a big arse ride + floor tom hanging off it....and still play it hard like john blackwell!

As for finish...may not have as big a range as pdp, but its all laquered and the atomic burst finishes are just flawless....no smurges or any kind of bleeding. For the pdps, even the modern drummer mag has reviewed it with some uneveness when studied in detail. In fact, twice in a row, the reviews had cons on pdps finish.

As for tama, if you can afford them...they're definitely a much better buy...their built and finish is just excellent...same for the yamahas. But in my opinion, the yamahas have a wider tuning range for more versatile playing.

marc: i dunno what really wrong about PDP hardware but most of the PDP users in PDF tend to change their stands to either Pearl or DW. This is from my almost 2 years browsing PDF.
But honestly, i never played a PDP drums. As for me, the PDP's oval lugs looks ugly. No offence PDP user. Just my P.O.V.

hmm thanks for the replies guys. i'm pretty interested in the MXR kit. probably call ranking up to get a quotation and see if they bring it in. i think i won't go yamaha because they're pretty expensive for plywood. hmm i don't really want to go tama because i heard the toms rattle on their suspension mounts. maybe i'll check out PDP more abit. i'm not so into pearl because pearl hardware is abit harder to adapt to.

For me, if you alone will USE you ur PDP kit at home, I guess everyone will agree, it will last a life time.

Of course you will take care of your own kit. Know for gigs, Id say then pdp is a couple of steps behind than that of pearl and tama.

Personally, if given the money, Id go for PDP maple series. I just dont like that they had there floor tom suspended...

yeah their lower end kits are given the PDP 8000 series hardware and i dunno bout it man but definately, and undoubtedly, the peace hardware for the DNA is damn sturdy... saw it once at music lab.. and the cost also surpized me for that kind of quality and make for that kinda money...

well yeah i also agree with the oval lugs, they look damn ugly lah haha...

but who cares bout looks if u wan the sound man... alvin, u got the modern drummer magazine article bout PDP? i'd like to read bout it man since im really thinking of getting it... also got any peace reviews and articles anort hehe...

the MXR kit is quite good lah for their 24" 10 lugs BD and for everything else, the shells are made by DW so yeah their shell should be good.. though i need to know more bout how they make it haha....!
