Need to convince parents in getting a drumset

i've always wanted to buy drums for quite a long time but my parents always say "no money no space" and the noise level is quite high anyone can give me some advice to help convince them?

i've got some ideas on finding space for the drums though

you could get a 2nd hand drum kit over here on soft under the Buy/Sell. there is also a thread (here) that teaches you how to muffle your kit so that it wouldnt be too loud/disturb your neighbours.

otherwise, you could consider getting an electronic drum kit. the cost would definitely be more pricey but you'll be able to play it 24/7 without even disturbing your parents. :D

hope this helps!

While ekits may have much lesser noise, the rubber pads that comes with the ekits (such as Roland TD3, etc) may make (monotonous) noise as well. I recommend a full mesh kit to really cut down on the decibel levels.

meh, i've kept my Pearl Target set for over 2 years now, and it hardly even has dust on it.
i keep it in a clean, mostly dust-free area, and make sure i vacuum often.

just a matter of whether you want the environment your drums is in to be clean or not. affects the actual condition of the drums more than you might think.

just to be safe though, give the hardware a good wipe now and then to clean up any trapped dust

2-3 years ago i was like you , trying hard to convince my parents in getting me a drumset . Just sit them down , and show them drum mutes or whatever products that helps reduce noise . But of course you must "promote" the product even better than the website .

Tell them how amazing those products work in reducing noise . Cause after they've got you the drumset (believing that the product works) , they can't do anything if it doesnt too . LOL .

and tell them it's okay to play the drums from 10am onwards til 10pm . but obviously don't whack like you're mastering chinese kungfu .

i used drum mutes , got them from Plaza Singapura's Yamaha , they work okay . It's still loud , but compared to a normal drumset without any mutes , it's alot alot alot better . Will still be able to hear me playing in my house , but once you step out of it , you can't hear anything . Yeah . So i havent receive any complains from anyone about me drumming .

Just try your best , let your parents know about drum mutes or any other product that reduce noise . It'll cost you around a hundred to get a full set muted , but compare it to soundproofing a room which can cause you thousands . ( By the way drum mutes affects the sound of the drum , in case you don't know . So it doesnt feel that nice compared to a real drumset. )

Hope you get your drumset soon , meanwhile just practice on your pillow or practice pad :D

Oh yeah , please dont "imagine" a space for your drumset , measure more than needed to be safe . You don't want to lie to yourself that "oh okay , my drumset can be placed here , it'll be okay." and end up sleeping on the drumset and using your floortom as a laptop desk . hahaha .

Take care !

you're welcome dude . i didn't help much , just sharing my grandpa story with you , and maybe a few reminders and tips .

just go for it , show them how badly you want your kit . :D

See ya !

you could try getting a pearl rhythm traveller.
it's much more compact compared to a regular drumset, and wiht mesh heads and plastic cymbals, noise is not a problem (that is if you don't mind playing on those)

tuning of your drums could be tuned to your own preference. it's good to get an already tuned drum kit so you dont have to go through the trouble of trying to get each tone right. lols.

what bt tuning? how do u guys tune ur toms? to a note or tune to the sound u like

for tuning , it will be in this order. (higher pitch) snare drum -> left tom -> right tom -> floor tom -> bass drum (lower pitch). it depends on you whether you want the drumhead to be tuned extremely tight or whatever it is. hope this helped you , provided you understand what im saying. anyone who thinks my explaination is wrong , feel free to correct me. (we are all learning!)

btw my laptop is not working , but i took the effort to type the above using a psp to help you. so i think you owe me a meal or at least a cup of coffee . HAHA , nah kidding.. take care! :D

thanks olaskz! lol it'll be cool to use the floor tom as laptop desk hehe

Eh no! hahahaha.
I don't know about you but I love my drumset too much to put my laptop on the floor tom. LOL!
Please don't give me anymore funny ideas. :p

Anyways, are you getting the set from your own pocket or your parents will chip in for you?

Well, for me, although I came from a pretty much music inclined family, my parents weren't really into the "having a drumset at home" idea.

But then, I went ahead anyways, went to order the drumset (which was SUPPOSE to be a gift for my little bro but well, i end up drumming too) and told them you can't cancel the order and the deposit will not be refunded. Hahahaha.

They were quite mad when I placed the order but end up being over excited when the set was delivered. Parents, sheesh. LOL!:p

oh and i wont recommend you to follow what Girlpants did. maybe your parents really cant fork out the cash. no offence. times are really bad now. But Girlpants deserves an award for her courage to do that , power la ! :D

Actually I saved up for the drumset lah and paid every single cent from my own wallet, which is now badly infested with flies. Saved up like crazy.
They didn't agree to having one cos there was no space at that time. LOL!
