hey guys.

I currently play bass and I've been playing for 3 years now. But im currently selling off all my bass gear to fund my guitar learning ambition and I'm looking for new challenges :p hahaha so im aiming for either a Squier Standard Telecaster or the Squier Telecaster with the Obey graphics.

I mainly play alt rock music.
I've read reviews that thats a pretty good beginner's guitar.
So what do you guys think?

Thanks :D
Jon

PS. I've taken guitar lessons 4 years ago before I played the bass guitar. So I kinda know some guitar stuff ;)

Well what kind of tone are you looking at? I play alternate music, too. But inside the genre there are many different sounds. There is an active thread in Gear-Guitar about this, and other budget brands. Do you want the Tele because of looks or you feel comfortable with its neck and weight? What's your budget? Is your budget inclusive of amp? Because the Squier doesn't come as a starter pack. Please elaboarate a bit more so that we may help you.

hey, haha i'm actually looking at the my chemical romance/anberlin/matchbook romance kinda tone. I also like guitarist Jim Root from Slipknot/Stone Sour's tone(the fat chunky tone with warm mids to be precise).

haha my budget is $600 and below. I actually already have an amp....its the marshall micro amp(I don't know if you guys think this amp is powerful enough...but its quite loud). hahaha

I waned the tele cuz of its looks(yes yes i know this is not a good reason). haha but yeah, im open to any other guitar. but the tele looks freakin' sexy IMO XD

I'm planning to ask a friend who has experience playing guitars to help me on the day im buying it.

Who says it's not? Well after considerations of feel, price and sound, then why not! Looks are an important part of the guitar. Well that's not really alternate, not in my books... I was thinking more of Paramore, Lifehouse, THe maine, We The kings... That's more of punk rock/metal tones? High gain distortions and the lot? Well you might think of a HH Tele, like the one Jim Root uses, as humbuckers are more suited for that kind of tone. It's under 600... Or, there are options secondhand as well. Hang around... My advice would be NOT to sell your bass stuff in case you discover that you love bass more.

oh hahaha psps my wrong on saying the genres wrongly XD

hmmm what you said is true on "NOT to sell your bass stuff in case you discover that you love bass more."
ill see what i can do bah..saving up $$$ isn't really a problem so my options are still open.

I've read your thread on the guitar gear section. lol seems like craftsman isn't as lousy as i initially thought. :P

No, they're not. THey have, in fact, stellar reviews amongst the poor students like me. It's just unknown and local, so... Great playability. The only complaint i have is with the stock pickups. I can't say i enjoy them. But say you get one for 200, you probably can get Seymour Duncans or DiMarzios and swap out the stock pickups if you don't like them. If saving up isn't a worry i recommend you do that then.
Okay to break it down simply, most Teles have 2 single coils. So for a humbucker tele, you either solder or you buy one with Humbuckers, and for that you may want to check out squier's website as they do produce factory made humbucker teles, which craftsman do not. If not you can consider many brands, go out and try them for yourself.

I think Craftsman would be a good choice. Not that Squiers are bad, in fact Squiers are good guitars from my experience, but there are cheaper alternatives such as Craftsman that match Squiers in terms of tone and quality.

True, but TS genre of music is mostly high gain metal/rock kind of sounds, so imo, using a humbucker is better than a SC. So i recommended Squier's HH Tele as it would fit both his tonal and visual needs. I haven't seen a HH Tele cheaper than theirs. Getting a Craftsman one and soldering would cost as much...

thanks for the replies guys :D

haha mmm ill try out both the squier HH tele and the craftsman guitars to find out personally.
i wouldn't want to regret buying the wrong guitar xD
