Need help getting a deep dark tone

Guys i've been looking for a deep dark tone with less sustain from my toms but i cant get it. my toms always sound very overtones. I've tried all tunning range. and it wont sound dark and deep tone. i using Evans G2 Coated on batter. i have no resonance head on the bottom part , cuz the previous seller lost it. is it because dat my toms dont have resonance head ? or is it because i dont know how to tune ?
