hi,

i'm planning to change the strings for my electric guitar and since im a newbie at this, im wondering if anyone could give advice on what type of strings to purchase ( hopefully not too expensive ones )

if you don't break your strings due to tuning, i recommend elixier strings can get it at $21 at guitar connections. I've used the strings it lasted me 3 months b4 it snapped, and i practice everyday without fail. It's a coated string that's why it's so ex, but it can last you for 3 mths if you practice everyday and if you don't then it can last u longer

Elixirs are my preferred choice of strings because of the anti-rust coating, it also feels great, sounds great, lasts REALLY REALLY long compared to most others. imo, if you string your guitar well and take care of it your $20+ will last you for even more than 3 months like 'Likui' mentioned. i'd recommend them to anyone. Cheers.

For the guys who swear by Elixirs.
Just a harmless, genuine question, have you guys tried other brands of coated strings?

Personally, I don't like the Elixirs one bit. Disclaimer, it's just my opinion.

Fresh out of the pack, they sounds thin. And I can't take their squeakiness and 'zing-ness'.

And one thing that I've observed about the Elixirs, they still look great after a few months. But, they sound totally dead. Looks good, sounds dead. What's the point then?

And I also can never get used to the feel of the Elixirs, too artificial for my liking. Oh yes, the coating tends to flake off too.

This problem persists even with the new version of the Elixirs, the ones with the improved treble strings.

And for the record, I've tried the entire range of coated strings available in Singapore.

My favourite hands-down has to be the Wyres. They sounds great out of the pack; big, bold and warm.

After a few months, they still sound awesome and feel awesome. However, they tend to look sort of worn-out.
In a way, the polar opposite of the Elixirs. Worn look, great sound.

And they don't flake. Because the coating technology is fundamentally different. Elixirs uses a 'condom' like coating. Wyres' coating is sort of like a micro-powder coating, so the more you play them, the more the coating seeps into the coils of the strings. This helps to retain the feel and tone of the strings over extended periods of them, because one of the reason why old strings feel and sound bad is because the tension is no longer properly spaced out over the length of the string.

Hope this helps.

Where can you find those strings?

i coat my strings myself, i use:

stringitup_2073_11588012

i uses those kgarage strings. 3.80 per pack. since your a newbie like me, it's difficult to differentiate the different kinds of strings. no point buying those expensive strings and not knowing why they are expensive, not appreciating them.
imo

i was using D'addario but then after using Rotosound, i sort of liked it more,
has more boom to it!

and where do how much is the liquid polymer coating thingy?
haha, and where is it available?

I agree with Wolfman on the Elixirs. I used to enjoy their look and all that, but as my ears matured, I realized your playing sonically dead strings.

I do think their acoustic strings are decent. But D'addario ones sounds just as good for more then half the price.

I'm really really sold by the Kurt Mangan Pure Steels. My God. My MG15 never sounded this good. It's absolute made for a Tele. And for a price you can absolutely manage~

D'addario's and Ernie Balls just don't cut it after a few days. It doesn't help I have radioactive skin and sweat.

Do use some string protectors like Dr.Duck, Kyser Klassics or the one shown above. They do help you save money and tone over a long time.
