NAMM 2010 - What's Cooking?

Wow, it's finally happening!

Roland's supernatural piano sounds interesting!...But how come it's only for the RD700GX?

The HP307 sounds good on video demo but I wonder at what price. It sure seems a strong contender for the CLP380. I like Yamaha but I am still a Roland fan :D

I hope more softies can provide new info/updates of their favourite keyboard makers/gears featured in NAMM here :)

It seems this year's Winter NAMM is geared towards DJ. Quite a number of new DJ stuff.

Korg has the new microsampler to add to their "micro" series.

Roland have the new VR-700 - updated version of their drawbar V-combo keyboard. Except for a new piano sounds, wav/aiff/mp3 playback and a nicer looking shell, I'm not sure if there's really anything new in the VR-700. The beauty of the V-combo has always been the physical drawbars (+ COSM technology) and the waterfall keys which are pretty rare nowadays.

Cakewalk and Roland combined came up with their new midi controllers. Nothing really exciting there since we already have quite a few sub-76 key controllers out there. With so many choices for midi controllers, you really have to come up with something revolutionary. I think we're already hitting a plateau in this area.

Nord has the Nord Piano.

Still waiting for something exciting. Winter NAMM is supposed to be better than Summer NAMM in terms of new products...

yes, sort of...
most of my my keyboards that i own were yamaha brand.
but i also hv a korg NX5R, which i use for play back of midi/xg files.

i think i also like roland, such as RD700GX and their v-pianos, but i hv no chance to try/test drive it. anyway, it's too expensive to buy...

and oh, and thanks for the link...

No exciting hardware stuff this year.
Either we are now officially in the age of the do-it-all software music studio or all the big players are cutting cost in R&D because of the financial meltdown in 2008/09.

No new or exciting stuff?!!!...Hit plateau?!!!

That's indeed sad. Really, gone are the days when we could see kybd makers coming up with more than one model every launch, eg. M1/T1, Trinity/Prophecy/Triton, XP30/50/80, etc.

I guess kybd makers are now just trying to add realism to instrument voices which software makers could provide for at better price and quality. True that low mentioned it's a do-it-all age for hardware kybds. I hope there will not be an end to hardware kybds...it just feels so different powering up a workstation than a midi controller. :)

ATW, thx for the news about the A-pros. That seems to be what Cheez was referring to. But how come no 88key?! :( ...I have a feeling they might just look like the PCR-series.

The A-Pro is nowhere near RD quality. It's all unweighted. I think it's just marketing gimmick - since Cakewalk is now part of Roland. Being "Roland certified" gives it some weight.

Even Muse has no more new ideas except adding SSD to their Receptors.

Indeed, what's next?

I would say.....unweighted and weighted keyboard into one! Hit a switch and the hammer mechanism falls away leaving the keyboard unweighted. Possible? My dream anyway! Recently, I had to play a variety of sounds from piano to e-piano to strings to B3. The 2nd keyboard (unweighted) didn't work at the last minute, so had to use my 88-key weighted for everything. And it's no fun playing B3 with all the extensive gliss on weighted keys. My fingers hurt like crazy when doing "down-up" (and "down-up-up" glissandos repeatedly. Will be nice to have both in one. THAT will be revolutionary... :)

And with that, we can have physical drawbars on all keyboards. Putting drawbars on 88-key makes no sense currently because it's weighted - hence you only see it on something like the V-combo. Imagine an 88-key with your favorite synthesis engine (Fantom, Motif, Karma or whatever you like) with physical drawbars + the ability switch weighted and unweighted keys. That will be a keyboardist's dream...

Maybe they can design workstations in the style of an organ...upper unweighted and lower weighted. It might look kinda cool...like a tank...although we can always have two keyboards and stack them up. :D

Two-tier workstation won't make it. Firstly, it's too much of a hassle to carry around. Second, as you said it, we can always stack 2 keyboards - which actually gives us more variety of sounds and flexibility, not to mention polyphony.

However, a 2-tier midi controller is feasible, as seen by the waterfall-keys modular Doepfer. It's still expensive though.

Just kiddin there, cheez :D
