My opinion of what's wrong/needs to be improved on with SG music scene.

Wow. Good stuff. Great points. People please read and re-read Shinobi's post. Stop whining and start working. Otherwise, we can all just blame our parents for giving birth to us, letting us suffer in silence in this world?

lack of respect and tolerance between bands. too much sense of competition. alot of people think they are better than one another, either that or they are trying to be better than one another in a sense, more popular, more myspace page views, etc.

more myspace page views, etc.

Its kinda retarded when it becomes a competition to see who can get more myspace views.... goodness. and the whole friend thing, give it up already...if ppl really like you they'd add you up on their myspace and not the other way round.

actually, adding people on myspace is a form of publicity. don't see anything competitive about that.

it may be just a publicity stunt....but some people just take it too far my POV.

Its either you'r there or not.

Ultimately, it is what comes out from your playing that matters. Keep improving yourselves.

I don't think there's anything wrong with our local music scene. The two camps are well-seperated. The amateurs stay amateurs, the professionals stay professionals. If you're always going to the same places to listen to the same kind of music that you think had never improved, you need to find the right places for some good music. :)

i think that more local bands need to think beyond just playing their instrument.

How many local band have their own sound engineer who follows them for every show?
Look at the consistency Electrico have achieved by working with Leonard Soosay for so long.
It carries through from the studio to the live show.

I have been really frustrated as a musician and an audience member by sound crews who don't give shit a bout he band on stage. E.g. the guy sings, but his mic never turn on or something along those lines.

Or you spend 30mins sound checking and the engineer doesn't even note down the mixer settings... (thank God for digital mixers!!!)

One thing we don't really see at all is local bands thinking about their stage decor (hanging a hat or scarf on a mike stand doesn't count!), backdrop, lighting (let alone having their own lights guy to run the show)..

We should start thinking about some of these elements rather than getting bogged down in finding the overdrive pedal with the most mojo, or arguing about whether or not Midnight Marvel sucks or not.

On a side note , the next MM show sure got crowd one because everyone kapo to see if they really do suck as much as Blank thinks they do! haha...

Hi!
Just to state for the record, we at Aging Youth don't exactly "QC" the bands. The bands who came under our label all started out as friends, going for gigs, drinking lots of beer and then realising "Hey I think we can trust these guys to distribute our album for us!"
I think we're just lucky that all our friends are way more talented than us.

blank, if you're keen, would you like to help out Aging Youth for our Spread the Love gig? 23 Nov at the Substation. Lemme know thru PM ok? Oh btw, this invitation is extended to all who are keen to give us a hand as well :)

Oh yes re: Midnight Marvel
I suppose if you're seeing them thru the eyes of the public, yeah I would agree the music is abit ... unusual. But if you take a look at who they are influenced by, maybe you will start to "get" the music.
What I do like very much about Midnight Marvel is their work ethic. Hardly a year since its inception and already, they have a website, merch to sell and good gigs. If you have the chance, talk to them, you will find that "rock out with your cock out" fire in their eyes.
How do I know that much? Well I'll be guesting as the bassist along with Terence on guitars (aka ZoRT) for Midnight Marvel for their Esplanade show on the 27 Dec along with a host of other bands! Do come down if you're free. Hopefully my playing will up their points abit.

eh wat, don't anyhow mention my name. Later really my cock come out rock how?

Anyway...blank's entitled with his opinion. If cannot, then it's like Speakers' Corner but cannot protest. He don't like, then ask him form his own band lor. Simple. You all don't like, work on your act or form a band to prove him wrong lor.

Anyway (again) bands nowadays not only about music liao. Also about selling themselves. The thing to look out for is how hard these bands work for themselves. Jam, work on new material, cleaning up old material, work on stage presence, merchandise, selling themselves etc etc. Singapore bands not like overseas bands, got manager or managers all to take care of admin for them so can concentrate on own music. So it's harder for us.

Oh don't forget our day jobs.

It's how the band can manage to do the above mentioned and still stay true to rocking their out that really makes them stand out (no pun intended).

because you just can't stop

wow, Leeson actually has some haters.. while i find that hard to believe, i suppose it's better than no one talking about you. -)

thanks for everyone who's stood up for the scene, whether the "good" or the "bad"

personally, i want to thank anyone's who does enjoy Leeson's music -) i think playing for people who like your music make it worthwhile.

but beyond the haters or the lovers, there's a romantic side to playing live, recording, jamming, putting out CDs.. it's that we just love doing it!

i believe that if you enjoy what you're doing, whether you profit or lose, you'd still make music in different contexts, some way or another.

no need to justify why we're doing certain things or playing certain genres, what our marketing gimmicks are and all that.. that's just the icing on the cake.

the question i ask today is, what would your soul say if you weren't doing music? i love it too much, i hope all of you do too -)
