My idea of soundproofing

hey bro DiscipleOfChrist.....
once u get the curtain, tell me hor....i wanna know oso....the price n stuff....
bt, does colour matter??...i mean, my fren told me that black colour absorb better than white colour....is it true??

ok, here's 1 suggestion. its the cheapest i know but in the same way, the ugliest.

u watched the movie "881"? inside the show, there was tis guy's studio, e sound proof it by using those cupboard egg trays. that actually works, it'll sound proof the place

For my jamming room i'm using double layered carpets, double layered curtains (1st layer PVC-type black-out curtains, 2nd layer really thick velvet) and thick velvet curtains that can be drawn to cover the doors. Works quite well. The double layered carpets help somewhat but to really cut out the vibration transmitted i think the drums need to be raised on those platform-type things to isolate them. The velvet curtains cut out quite a lot of mid to high frequency sounds but not so much the low-end.

I read those egg trays are useless for soundproofing though they may help for sound control (cutting out echo, flutter, etc). Didn't try it myself so can't really comment.

My next step is to get acoustic foam for my walls and ceilings.

well about the colour, isn't it working only to heat and cold ? that black colour absorbs more efficiently.. about sound waves, hmm.. colours matter !?

Hmmm....i oso have no idea....

Abt acoustic foams, there is a shop i went at NAFA bugis there....ard the corner frm that sch, there is a shop selling all the recording equipment....like acoustic foams, software n stuff....
and so i asked abt the foams prices....it kinda ex if i wanna cover the whole of my room....the measurement is like 30cmx30cm will cost u abt $60....that is the cheapest among the 4 type of acoustic foams....

or mayb, u can try buying mattress from any neighbourhood matrress shop....each single bed matress will cost abt $30....so its cheaper....n bigger by the size....

I may be wrong, but I think acoustic foams don't really help much in terms of soundproofing. Their main purpose is to prevent sound from bouncing off the walls.

Cupboard egg trays really don help much. I spent a lot of time collecting all these cupboards and stuck it up to my wall and i cant hear the difference, the only diff my bro says is the smell of the room. LOL

Lol! A movie's just a movie. In the same movie, the Durian Sisters also shot laser out of their costumes leh... so buying the same costumes can get the same effect? :p

At best, it's a very budget form of acoustic treatment which cannot be strategically applied.

for acoustic treatment, you can go with rock wool. place it on your walls and cover it with thick cotton. it really improves the acoustic of a room.

I oso duno wad helps....so most prob, i gonna buy 2 matress and try it out first....then if not good, or no diff in sound absorbtion, i can sleep on the matress...haha....

re:

Hi guys im a techy at NoiseStop Systems Singapore

Firstly if you are living in a flat & you are using standard heavy curtains you will only reduce the noise very little.
You need to use a lined curtain.
Also once the noise exits the room and your neibour is upstairs or down, its hightly unlikly they will not here the noise and noise is directional mean when it goes out side it can not then come back in if there is nothing for it to be reflected by.

Foams are not used for soundproofing they are used for acoustic treatments, to get rid of echo, reverb etc. Puting foams on your wall aspecialy the ones that are used in beds will only make your room hotter.

for your last question yes you need a special type of adhesive to bond to your wall, but as mentioned before i dont recomend this at all because the only result will be that your room will retian heat better in the foam.

If you could exsplain in more detail what your problems are we are here to give you free advice.

re: matress

If your thinking of using a 2nd hand matress have you considered bed bugs?
They live and breed in the foam, so unlless you want to get serously itchy avoid.
