i have a guitarist friend that says bass is damn easy to learn because there's "only 4 strings" and that bass guitars are useless because all they do is "dum dum dum dum" and they require no skill to play. and that they are for failures at guitars. i am really irritated as i'm a bassist. wad do i tell him?

ask him if his block of flats has a foundation :D

alternatively, irritate him by saying "ur home entertainment system has an entire speaker dedicated to me!"

Stop playing halfway during a song...

See how important your role is.

During his solo.. Stop playing as well..

He'll go out of timing?

PLay a wrong note... He'll get thrown off..

jony: he's a friend that plays the guitar. not a bandmate. i don't have a band lol.

Ah.. Dont bother with his musical ideas then..

as a guitarist myself, I think bassist are important in making music.. Period.

Every other level headed Softie will agree, I am sure...

:)

Continue holding the low end!!

introduce him to Billy sheehan, Marcus Miller, Abraham Laboriel, Victor Wooten and such people...

and tell him bass is 'easy'.

tell him BASS is a very important support in the band, without the bass, the band wouldnt sound complete and lack of support. IF he doesn't have a band, u can just tell him to fuxx off and live in his solo world lol.. anything else, ask him to refer to this thread and we can give him a thrasing

thong thong thong thong thong......

well bass always underrated these days in Singapore.

But I love DRUM AND BASS.... Check out some of our
local bass hero...you will know how juicy it can be..haha

Tell him only Boyband music don have bass..so if he don like bass he must be a boyband lover or boyband wannabe...

Hmm are some of us saying what we say because it is the right thing to say?

I remember when I was just started, they told me bass was important and stuff, but when i listen to the radio and these songs come on with the distortion and all I just could not understand what bass had to do with the overall sound of the song. I couldn't find any explanation for bass in LP or other bands as well. Yeah you guess right, in the beginning I thought the same too.

Then I heard Tetsu from L`arc~en~Ciel, their earlier works. Tetsu made an effort to make his bass distinctively audible, and showcased what the bass could do. Slowly... I could hear the bass in other songs as well. Then Iron Maiden came into the picture and I got a deeper understanding into bass.

Bass.... an elusive sound and tone... Opening it's wealth to those who would listen....

:D

many softies think i am noob sheet, your friend is more even more noob than i am lah...i cant stand playing with a band when the bassist is absent, the whole feel of the song changes man...:D

Bass is more important than guitar I would say. Guitar can be replaced by any other instrument capable of playing chords like keyboard if need be.
Good bassist + drummer = super groove!

Pier.

listen to spiral architect's album and hear how big a role the bass plays.. and even in jazz, the bassline is so important..
