My 1st (Guitar) Lesson In 11 Yrs

Just thought I'd share that I'm taking my first actual guitar lesson since I picked up guitar over 11 years ago.

So this evening, a friend has arranged a evaluation lesson with an American guitar tutor living at Tampines.

The fact of the matter is that if you don't foster (mantain) the knowledge and technique ... no amp or guitar is going to make you sound any (much) better.

I'v noticed in the past 3 years, my vocabulary and picking speed have steadily declined and I can no longer play all the stuff I used to when I was in my late teens.

So off it is for lessons. I'll keep u guys posted on developments ....

Cheers :D

do u still play consistently?....i'm experiencing tt now...my picking speed and accuracy is deteriorting although i still play abt average 1 1/2 hour per day?

Nah, I think I've turned into a collector more than a guitar player. There is an infinite amount of distractions and once I have kids, there's going to be another reshuffle of time management priorities.

i think just play ur guitar 15-30mins a day. You should be able to maintain ur playing skills.

But this alone is hard. sometimes i also find it difficult to come out with the time. So u gotta force some time out for your guitar everyday.

well ... I completed one lesson so far (combined with another friend). Enough for Mike to evaluate me.

Mike has a fairly easy going style and his primary focus is for his students to understand the mechanics of music .... song structure, learning to read music notation ... etc, etc.

However, for reasons I prefer not to mention, I'll be switching tutors to a different person.

Classic/thrash metal .... Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, ACDC, King Diamond, Racer X, Slayer .... that sorta stuff, always to lazy to learn the entire songs, just the riff and licks that interested me.

Hi Newbie, unfortunately I don't.

In any case, you'd probably wanna hear the stuff from our other resident shredders i.e. Chan Min, Dhalif .... even then (years back), I never had their proficiency.

Hey - don't beat yourself up too much - the stuff you played in the THD demo videos a coupla months back impressed me. :)

You have your own style man, and that's what counts.

Anyway, no harm in taking lessons - I always said "I want to be self taught and I never want to take any lessons" and it was a kind of stubborn pride that I was self-taught that held me back. Then, last year, I started to take classical lessons and it just opened up so many doors, techniques and harmonic/melodic possibilites that I would never have found on my own that I apply to my main love of electric improvisation. Keep 'em up dude - and no harm in shopping around for teachers too. Just cos someone calls themself teacher doesn't mean they are necessarily any good. My old English teacher was a hopeless alcoholic who couldn't spell and had shit grammar but that never stopped him...

You see, you gotta know the moves dude. :)

When you have a baby, your guitar time can actually increase. After all, no mom is gonna say no to 'the music willl help his brain develop' or 'he likes it - it calms him down - see? He's listening' or 'I'm playing a lullaby...' (this one doesn't work if you are playing a Slayer riff).

And you needn't feel bad, because all of the above is true! Music *is* good for babies. Proven, fact, the factorum, case closed.

Yo mark ... wah biang eh ...will never forget your guitar ROOM .
