If you're really gonna get into learning musical notation and theory may I suggest Music Reading for Guitar by David Oakes, it's on the Musician's Institute catalog. Very reputable collection of books from the guitars at MI.

But learning music theory strictly is a pretty mean task on guitar. It's not like the piano where one note is just at one position, on guitar you have the same notes all over the damn place.

I feel however it's important for you to know scales and chords. Best to focus on chords first rather than scales. With chords you will learn voicings and how scales actually relate to them. Its much easier to go this route than to do it the other way round.

Hope this helps.

Try getting the Guitar Encylomedia from Guitar77. :) Its around $30 (?) there... and its a nice take of an all in one book, tailored for guitarists.

someone mentioned before.. if you don know theory..

you are learning/playing blindly and it hold some truth for me..

espcially when you learn all the position of CAGED without going back to

understand how everything is actually map out from major/minor scales.

learning to read note when helps to remeber all the position of almost every keys
