Music talk 2008

I have to say I prefer the more varied style of this album compared to their recent offerings, although it's really not a stretch from the later Meshuggah's material. It's not really a throwback to their older style, but the opening track is really uncharacteristic of Meshuggah.. who would expect a straight ahead thrasher from these guys? A really cool surprise... Thomas Haake is phenomenal drummer, I read that he took a few months to learn to play Bleed. I guess if you hear the pedal work on that track, you'll understand why, haha...

Friend and Foe by Menomena

Wincing the Night Away by The Shins (though I very much preferred their earlier albums)

People by Animal Collective! <3 <3 <3

Bleed requires 2 brains to play:

*1 controlling the leg work for that accelerated pounding

*1 for the hands because it's performance is detached from the leg work

Haake owns both 8-)

Still waiting for Judas Priest's latest release. Tak sabar tak sabar..

An okayish cd, although it remeinds me why i no longer listen to power metal. Typical verse-chorus-verse structure formula throughout the whole cd and not much variation. The guitar playing is impressive as per requisite of this genre these days.

See aboe review, although this band falls more on the progressive side of things. Game of Fear is a sweet song, it has to be said though.

Wow. Just wow. Although stil not up to par with releases like failure for gods, this is an impressive release. The atmosphere they conj our up with this release is astounding.

About a 100 years too late in buying this cd, but well worth the purchase. john Tardy's vocals are simply, unique.

Arbitary Element - Process Of Extermination
Not my cup of tea, though i do hear cryptopsy influences in some parts. Paul Danials guest solo is awesome.

My three recent purchases are all important metal releases from 1990–at least for my metal upbringing...

Flotsam & Jetsam - When The Storm Comes Down
Mercifully re-released and re-mastered by Metalmind Records.
A much under-appreciated album mainly because of the production but I've always loved this one.

Destruction - Cracked Brain
Another overlooked release from one of German's premiere thrash bands. Still in print but pretty rare.

Wrathcild America - 3-D
A 'too-ahead-of-their-time' release from the under-appreciated progressive-thrash outfit. Got it used for 6 bucks. Out of print rarity.

Joe Satriani - Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock

lol... anyone heard it yet? It's quite interesting.

(sorry guys, i lost the username and password... cant upload album art)

At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul

This is the reissue album, it surprised me! Good stuff.

sub: where do you get those metal cds? do you import them or are there shops in singapore selling these? so far i only know of a shop in penin that sells metal cds.

Top 5 CDs bought/trade from LordRul. (Thanks brader!) ;)
Suicidal Tendencies and Malmsteen's Odyssey are upgrades from cassettes.
Nailbomb, Fudge Tunnel and Prong are 2nd purchases. Lost mine during my "frequent" house moving(s) period.
Dream Theater i can't resist at $19.95 for a 2CDs set!

Wrathchild America, got that 3D album and another one with "purplish/bluish cover" cassettes!
They're stashed somewhere at my mum's place, definitely rotting-mouldy by now!
I have this urge to buy a used Walkman and transfer all those early cassettes into digital format.
But feels like i don't have the time/too lazy to just do it!
Kinda misses my Voivoid, Flotsam & Jetsam, Testament, Death Angel, Overkill, Warrior Soul, etc...

I was in KL for 3 days from May Day till Saturday...
Visited a few CD shops in KL recommended by Bob from the Pilgrims.

Got these old CDs from Malaysia's old underground bands:
- The Pilgrims - Music From The 100% Original The Pilgrims Motion Picture
(Live CD from one of Malaysia's great old-skool underground bands.)
- Carburetor Dung - Songs For Friends
(They performed in the early 90s at the Substation, I believed. Joe Kidd owns the cool Ricecooker Shop at Central Market.)
- Kugiran D'Tepi Pantai - Don't Panic, Let's Picnic!
(This is a surf CD by Kombat, he plays with the Pilgrims too. There's a series of other CDs by them, but this is the 1st.)

I'm still looking for Infectious Maggots CDs, but they're long out of print...

There's no new CDs for me to show. Just these... I "found" these old cassettes of mine in a wardrobe at my mum's place! There's lots and lots more in boxes... Everything from Chastain to Loudness to Kreator to King Diamond... I remember buying them for between $6.50 to $8. And i spend most of my lunch money on them instead of eating!

I'm trying to get hold of a good cassette player and start transferring most of these music into my Mac. Then they will be "new-old" music for me to relive my younger days again...
