music soundtrack

It will be best to actually see the clip to give suggestions. It all depends on what the company of the condo want to advertise - ie what the strength of their condo advert is.

If it's trees, flowers, happy family in a living room etc... ie a relaxing lifestyle - then something really relaxing and soothing. If it's swimming pool, tennis court, squash court etc ...ie sporty, then something more upbeat. All depends on the clip. Important to write a genre of your expertise rather than something you've never done before. Safer in this setting. Whatever it is, it should not capture too much attention (ie background/elevator music may be the best).

All the best! Don't forget to let us listen when you're done!

Actually, off topic for a while here, the shorter the piece, sometimes it gets more difficult.

Lately, I've been thinking of a new challenge. Perhaps we should all think of a 3-4 seconds piece for the startup/shutdown music for Windows. Or a ring-tone etc.

Your name, bongman; kinda cool, but you do work for free that other's charge for and make a living out from. Why spoil market??????

At least charge something that is 20-30% below market rate. Anything lower is just spoiling the market, both for yourself and for those making a living out of this sort of work.

Think about it. If you are good, and that is the reason why they hired you , then they should be willing to pay for your work. Otherwise, they are just wanting to ride on your ego. Not only for this trip but for a few more that will come up as time ticks away (read, in the near future).

If you really need to build up a portfolio, then get in touch with non-profit or not-for-profit organizations and even educational institutions (for students' projects) and volunteer your work there. In fact, students from NTU and a few of the polys may even pay you some pittance as their works may be partly sponsored.

In due time, you will have a portfolio. How good it is depends on how good you are. Everything else is BS.

Alright bro, I hear you. I do also hope that know where I'm coming from and that you take it to heart in whatever you do.

I've worked on such projects, including mega-cities and it all boils down who it is that is producing the entire piece - the visuals and the music?

He/She should have a good idea as to whom the condominium is being marketed to - singles, young couples, matured couples, yuppies etc. Mind you, all condominiums today incorporate some form of high-tech infrastructure - that info is too light-weight for you to want to work with.

If you want to do a professional job, you really need to act professinally. So bear with me here - I'm not talking down to you.

You have to ask the right Qs. In your case, ask the producer for info on the target audience, the type of music/genre, instrumentation, main instrument (if any) and if he/she has something in mind or a sample that they feel may work.

It also depends if your company is a design company, a markerting company or the actual developers. You need to ensure that the info you get is from the people that matters most. In this case, it will be the developers.

Good Luck

Yo Bongman, Rork is right bro!!!

i totally understand the need to do this FOC this time(Your reasons are valid)...however, please indicate to the dudes that they will be charged a fee for the next project onwards, otherwise they'll definitely take you for another free ride.

Trust me, corporate people don't really understand(and they don't want to) the pain of writing a piece of music. Worst case scenario is that they expect you to give them what they want(after what i call the "ping-pong match by making you do and re-do until they are totally happy) at the shortest time.

Just my 2 cents' worth of advise.

Cheers...

Hiya, bongman :)

Most of my waking hours revolve around music, thank God I'm blessed with doing what i love to do, plus get paid for it....

Good to know you've got good support from your web designer...Ummm, why the sheet music part though?

I've just upgraded my Protools set up to PT7.3, running software synths now. As much as i love my Hardware synths, i've to let them go to maximize my workspace. Anyway, i can't bear to see my equipment lay around wasted, rather let them go to other musicians who would find more use for it.

Another reason for my (reluctant) upgrade to the new PT setup is so that i could keep up with the industry's rat race...Heheheh...Gotta let go of the old and keep up with the new.

Peace Bro.. :D

Thanks!! :)

Hmmmm...I think your dude that told you to write the sheet music thing might have been mistaken "sheet music" for "music cue-sheet". Music cue-sheet is not a score sheet, and it is used to document the music that's used for the project. Example - Say, a 30mins documentary production....(This relates to the Timecode of the project) On the 5th second from the start of the docu, I use a track from Prodigy, and that song goes on for 30 seconds. So in my cue-sheet, I write it as Timecode: 0:05:00 to 0:35:00 -Smack My B**ch Up"...And maybe from the 45th second from start of the docu, i use another track, and this track plays for 15 secs, I follow up with 0:45:00 to 1:00:00 - Song 2....etc etc...until all songs used in that 30 minutes docu has been properly documented. This is an important procedure, as it will indicate clearly to the next person what's going on in the project. In case there's a need to edit something in that project, the producer/editor knows exactly where to locate to edit or change a sound track/sound effect or visual....

With regards to PT, go get the 003 when it's launched...PT7.3 rocks!!! (Hehehe,I'm inviting flames from hardcore software sequencer users here..Sorry guys,I find burning session files and bringing it to the studio for mixdowns more productive than having the need to convert files first..Most studios run PTs..)

IMO, I prefer setting up from scratch, hence get new instead of upgrading..Main reason? You'll never know what will conflict, as you go along the steps whilst doing the upgrading/updating process....

Cheers.

No idea to contribute. But can give you a consumer grade feedback.

How come all the condominium projects' advertisements I have seen on TV are almost the same (the visuals) ? and boring too.........
I cannot recollect any of the music pieces with these commercials too -
none of them made a strong impression on me. :-(

Hmm...it seems to me a boring topic, I think there's not much for practising creativity. Don't be too stressed over the music, the visual may play a stronger role than the auditory impression, perhaps the music just have to enhance the visual impressions effect.

It's just like cars advertisement often show speed, snazzy music in the commercial, show off the curves of the car, and handsome drivers. Standard recipe ingredients although the ingredients can be worked on a bit.

yes, music must not override the visual.

usually, the director or creative director will discuss about the theme/feel required.

you as the composer, could propose certain musical style to compliment the mood.

style like - rock, rap, jazz, salsa, disco .... etc.

next thing you got to do is mark where the mood change is require in the video.

overhead crane shot of swimmers in swimming pool -
tennis player hitting ball -
lady joggin, greet male neighbour -

dolly shot of living room -
follow shot of lady coming out of kitchen, put food on table -
mid shot of lady and male partner sipping wine -
dolly shot of lady and male partner cuddle in front of tv -

you can see from the above visual, the first part is more active, fast paced music.

the second part is more stylish, mid tempo.

got to find out if they have VO (narrations) in the video. coz if your music is fighting with the message, the mix engineer can't do much other than soften your music.

sound design is very important when working with video. normal sound will make the video look normal.
