Music Attack! - Gig Opportunities 2007

My experience with recent music attack.

1)We were given the designated timeslot only 1 day before the gig. Very hard for us to coordinate with friends who are coming.

2)We were asked to play 30mins ahead of our designated timeslot without prior knowledge. Then some ang-moh told us if we dont start playing, we can forget about playing for that night.

3)Soundman not doing his job. My band didnt setup properly i admit but when the instruments are covering the mics...the soundman should be doing something no?

Conculsion...for my band we sold all the 20 tickets and more. Entire band turned up at the appointed time for the gig. Setup, played our set within 30mins and we didnt damage any equipment.
Defintely more then honour our side of the agreement. But what we got in return is this kind of treatment from the organizer and that ang-moh. From this incident, i can only conclude he is more interested in moneymaking then holding a decent gig for the bands.

they don't give a damn about small bands unless you're some big shot band that draws customers, then he will shut up. Next time just bribe him with $1 and last time i played, my slot from 330 was changed to about 230 which means we were the second band playing :?

haha so much flaming, anger and frustration..

okie, lets have something different for now.. my band played @ Music Attack III (the 2nd date).. things were good although i din see the organizer there (as usual).

initially, they told us that our band is playing next @ 7pm, then another band said its there turn (but no fights, no quarrels, we settled it cool, so my band get to go 1st *thanks to the band who gave way to us :)*).

since our songs are mainly alternative punk rock, so we din go over 4mins plus per song.. 5 songs on stage and we're done for the day - satisfied and happy..

however, there is always 2 sides to the coin.. i din noe we're paired together with all the metal acts until the poster is out.. abang Roy told me its mutli-genre & BIG!! but when we got there, screaming/goring band, headbanging & vioent crowd + there was only the other alternative punk band.. i was kinda disappointed, but nonetheless, thanking Roy for allowing us to play (actually we kinda worked hard to sell tix just to play)..

the 2 soundmen were good to us too.. i chatted with them just before our set, told them my preferences for the mic level & tone & he did it for me, no questions asked, no abuse thrown *thank you dudes*.

so it ain't that bad afterall eh.. all u gotta do is :) smile!!

see..Gerald from Knightsfall is so cool about it...yeah i salute you man! (my guitar wants to kill your mama yeah..)

If it was me who wasn't thoroughly informed..hmm,hmm,hmm,hmm...

HAHA. he asked my band to get off the stage too. he gave us 4 songs and we played 5. but each of our songs lasted less than 3 minutes. ain't very fair cause i thought we were allowed 30 mins

Always Flaming/anger happens when theres gig at GasHaus.

Aiyo !

GasHaus is not the appropriate place to gig lah. Seriously. The bands performing are like their money making machines. Getting drunk b4 giging is bad. really bad. Its a bad influences for the Local bands who wanna be in this industry. This Is Singapore! not overseas. We play music for the passion of it. I Know, singapore band's/musician don't earn much from musics. Its much to Passion.

So yeah, GasHaus, its time to wrap up! Your whole system is wrong. Simply wrong!

wrong types of crowds and when first time music gig-supporters visit Gas Haus and see all those, its a very bad impression.

System of selling to perform-> wrong
place-> nothing wrong
genre of music-> nothing wrong, (but dont lump every genres together for the sake of cash)

come on guys..dont get upset over this. Don't tell me singapore's has only one gig organiser aka. Gas haus management?
Let's hope singapore's music scene really doesn't end in gas haus and vanish because of so much negative feedbacks and doubtful behaviours.

Its damn obvious that Gashaus is in ONLY for the money. The attitude of the caucasian man and the bartender is really f***ed up.The bartender thinks hes like the coolest guy or somethin.I hope no bands play there ever again. And Music attack is most badly organised gig that ive been to.Oh yea,did i mention that the soundman started playin some hip-hop track on the system while my friend's band was STILL playin? It was halfway through their 4th song and definately the half hour wasnt up.They were forced to stop playin and abandon their set.Ahhh how nice.

if you dont like, dont be a pussy, dont complain, dont go for his gigs, dont play for his gigs, go support other organisers like cavents or something and shut up. seriously grow up.

Please, stop the hate. =)

If Gas Haus really was in it for the money, they'd have packed up their drums and amps long ago and played R&B or KTV- seriously, it's much more profitable. Most emo kids and metalheads who end up there tend to buy drinks and food from LJ's and 7-11 and end up not actually helping the place at all.

Rental isn't cheap, especially in the Bugis area. And Luke's a nice guy if you treat him well, as is any other poor overworked and underpayed chap. For him to treat you guys that way, he must see lots and lots of crap bands and promoters everyday! Be professional, whoever you are and whatever your position is, and you'll find that life is easier for everybody.

I find Gas Haus to be a decent place with great location and a nice ambience. If the equipment is thrashed, who do you blame? Peace, guys!

Let bygones be bygones? Sure, I dont see why not..

I dont hold any grudge against the organiser. In fact, I want to thank him. (Well, at least my band was given a chance to play.) It was just some people-in-charge that day that were really showing lack of respect for the bands that were playing there.

Sure, most of us arn't rock legends. BUT if we put in so much effort into what we love, (spending time and money on jamming, pestering our friends to come for the gig and playing on gig day itself.) Shouldn't we deserve much better than a 'GET THE F*** OFF THE STAGE'?

My review/rant was never intended to raise hatred, only awareness for those bands may who want to perform at GasHaus in the future. This IS a thread for the event you know. And Im sure everyone comprehends that if positive feedback can be accepted, why not negative ones?

Aiyah,as a soundman you shouldn't get drunk la. Where is the respect when the band hasn't even finish performing with a "p" and you turn hip-hop on..imagine if the band is a genuine progressive metal band who has been practising like 10+ times in studios just for this gig...and you do that to them.

Not everyone is there to listen to the music, most are there to mosh or support their relationship with the bands. Simply satisfied with cash flown in and neglect the band's feeling is afterall not a nice thing.

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply.

Before I start my statement, i would like to forward my million thanks to all the bands who performed last Sunday's gig. Really appreciate your efforts!

Even though I wasn't there, I heard that the turnout was fantastic (close to 300), the bands were great and the response from the audiences were overwhelming.

I apologised for the short sets. It was besause the gig started late as no bands willing to perform early. Therefore we have to start at 5pm. But still we've calculated that each band will have enough time to perform. However the technical fault (problems with drums pedal) worsen the situation.

Once more I apologised for the inconvenience.

Will try our best to improve future situations ok.

In regards of the soundman, he's actually a very nice guy. U must understand that he has to face 12-13 bands every single week! And that's like 50+ bands in a month, more than 300 bands in 6 months!! That's a lot of bands! Please spare a thought on how much pressure he has to handle every single week. This job ain't easy but someone has to do it. Please be nice to him ok guys. If u cooperate with him, he'll be surely nice to you.

Before I finish off, I would suggest that if any of u guys who experinced any problems in regards to the gigs, feel free to talk me. I'm open to your suggestions.

Thanks for your comments & views!

Appreciate it.

idea

I got an idea

To those bands that is not happy with your gig at gashaus.
Why not, we gather all of the unhappy band to organise our own gig at the different location.
Eg: Outdoor.

We find a way to organise it ourself and we work together on every aspect.
Eg:
How many tickets sold, it's yours.
What kind of equipment we need we share $
Find a location, we pay $ we share $

And we call our own gig by what ever you want it to be.

No offend Xtremeboy, just to give them some idea to realese their frustration.

hey ajak thats not a bad idea too.. y not someday perhaps.. might become reality..
no offence xtremeboy but if the soundman can't take the job why not quit and appoint someone that can..

If you can't treat their equipment and place with respect , why should they respect you?

To all you whiners out there , tell me truthfully have you ever brought outside food and drinks into the place? If so then the people at Gashaus have every right to treat you with disgust. Maybe it's because you kids have less purchasing power as compared to the adults when it comes buying in house food and drinks but does that give you any reason to be real cheapos?

Why not try bringing in your 7-11 alcohol into DXO or Zouk instead and see whether the people there will treat you with respect or not.

By the way I was there last sunday (which attributed to my "standard of music going down the drain" forum post) and as much as I could buy cans of carlsberg at the nearby 7-11 , I chose to purchase alcohol from the bartender instead because its the least I could do to support the place apart from the ticket sales.

You pay peanuts (in a form of giving crappy performances) , you get monkeys.

Grow up and learn to eat suffering please....Life's like that.
