multi effects plus analog

the backing tracks a little loud and distracting so its hard to tell, cant really crank it up now. the delay on the lead tone strikes me as "digital" though..its very pristine. i'd say modeller again. nice composition by the way..

Hmm... This was recorded in a recording studio in Mediacorp Radio, using a BOSS ME30 as an effects processor, thru a Fender Vibroking, and one Shure SM57 mic at 30cm away from the main axis of the cone into a DI box thru a protools software driven by a mac G4.

See my point?

well i think that sort of shows my point too..the ME30 in the chain was enough to color the sound from a nice amp and fooling me into thinking it was a modeller ;)

i should clarify though that im no analog purist at all..whatever works for the track is what goes on the record. i think i actually prefer your XT Live tone in terms of clarity heh, though it could easily be the mix.

On the same note, do you guys prefer the XT Live or X3 Live? In terms of tone and usability?

people can tell the difference, quite easily in fact. alot of digital aliasing noise in the high end sometimes..people like analogue simply because its a flawed medium in terms of hi-freq response..you lose top end and thus it sounds "warmer". i thought the MT-2 wasn't digital, in that it isn't using any chips/dsp? you can get good tones out of a MT2 true, but thats going into the right amp, bringing it into the analog medium.. speakers and air moving, not 1's and 0's

Arctopos: you have one heck of a hearing, cos more likely than not 80% of us couldn't tell the difference. All we know is that it doesn't sound like a robot trying to sound like a guitar; in other words, it sounds good!

Your arguments about how it still sounds digital in your ears, are completely valid. I'm not discrediting you at all about this. But I don't see why you really are keen on pointing out that it STILL sounds digital as long as there is a digital device in between the signal chain, no matter what.

I read his post again and from what I comprehend, his overall point with his demonstration of a digital multifx recording as such: That it doesn't sound TOO digital enough to sound completely crap. That digital can, in fact, sound pretty good. That nobody should shun away from such technology. It was never about trying to prove whether digital efx can sound completely NON-digital or not.

Of course, keeping the idea about John Mayer's recording through a stack load of analogue equipments before translating it to a digital "1s and 0s" in mind, perhaps the sterile-ness of digital's unforgiving high frequency capture can also be reduced through a reversed process of recording a digital sound through an analog chain or format eg guitar > digital effects > analog mixer > analog tape. That is, if one thinks that it is utter heresy to have anything that remotely hints of digital in the final sound recording.

Dude, just for the record, that 2nd track I posted? I personally thought I sounded crap thru that set up... But that was like almost 10 years ago, and I knew less about gear back then...:p

I was refering more to the post with your recording through your POD XT Live, man

You were working at Mediacorp Radio? Who did the set up for the gears?

Yeah... I know... but my point with the ME30 was that it was bad, even though the set up was good...

Yeah... I worked in MCR back then. The setup was done by the recording engineer, but the EQ and settings were my own. So, it's MY fault it sounds like shit... whahahahha...

Hahaha! I almost blamed your engineer there :p

Micing amp never easy ah. Too bad don't have amp modellers back then. But some people just refuse to believe in emp emulation even in this day, so lan lan lor...

Ya man... I was clearly missing something. I had good gear (Even the ME30 isn't bad if tweaked properly)... But I think I didn't know what I was doing back then... But the guitar campaign was well received though... so can't be that bad...
