Muffling

Sheesh man, it's his own practice kit, he can do whatever he wants to it. It's not as if he's gonna lug it to performances and play on newspaper-stuffed drums.

Ok chill every1.

1) He got neighbours that are not deaf
2) Its his set
3) He is a great drummer

so...let him be with his set.we're here to help him out...not make his decisions.wadeva his decisions are, i respect it. :D

Good luck mr. buah! hahaha...i'll rape ur set 1 day...

Well, Funkifized, I think you got me wrong here. He does have an e-kit for practicing on. And stuffing his Artstar with newspapers will make them feel no better than those rubberpads/meshheads on the e-kit (which, incidentally, is what he's trying to avoid doing, no one likes playing on rubber pads all day eh. :D)

If someone needs to practice silently, I can see why he would want to do that. But Justin is looking to purchase cymbals and new heads too, don't tell me he has to stuff the newly headed drums with newspapers and duct tape his cymbals?

Anyway, my apologies if I come off as a jackass, I meant all this in benign goodwill, Justin is a great drummer and a fellow drummer who I share an acquaintance with, but this is his first acoustic drumset and I believe it's only right to let him know it's not possible to have his drums resonate and sing out well at a soft volume. Drums are plainly loud, I'm sure any drummer can testify to that.

Admittedly I'm too obstinate in my opinions on muffling, but I for one prefer practicing silently on an e-kit which has perfect sounding drums going through my headphones rather than practicing on drums so stuffed they sound no different from cardboard boxes.

alrite guys i appreciate all the err. things. i mean info here

alrite. can please show me a picture of the err.. sabien quiet tones? and i wanna see how it works on a drumset. yah muffle and mute it i know DUHHH but hOW?!?!?

ok i've decided not to buy those damn heads anymore cuz they're so expensive!!. my heads aren't that bad either wad.
bass drum batter head is an Evans G2
snare drum batter head is Evans ST DRY (watever it is)
1st tom battter is REMO weather kick ambassador batter
2nd and floor tom is REMO ebony.

so i have a combo of heads!! how cool is that 8)

abuot the muffling shit. i agree that this drumset is a fantastic kit. but. u know how staying in a HDB is such a bitch. wat i was saying was. i need to mute the drum. but i dowan to use rubber pads cuz i wanna hit the SKIN. NOT RUBBER but yet, have the sound that comes out to be really really soft yea?. i really have no choice but to kill the tone now. sacrifice tone for volume. and i've already tried stuffing newspapers, pillows and stuff into the bass drum and personally it doesnt kill the feel.
but hey i haven't actually tested the tolerance of my neighbours. so.. i guess tml i take away the stuffings!! hehe!! then i'll whack the shit out of it for an hour. if they bitch, then.. no choice.. back into the bass drum those stuffings go.

about my e-kit. i'm sick of it. i'll only use it for practicing my rudiments. i hate the bloody rubber. but i can' possibly practice 3 hours of rudiments on my snare drums. i'll get jailed soon.
so please.. flame all u want =) very entertaining but also. keep the info coming in! i really appreciate it alot guys thanx!

ok i saw the err sabian quiet tones. i wanna know how they actually work. cuz from wat i see on www.sabian.com it's like.. there's so much stuff. ok talking about the drum mutes la. nto cymbals.. i mean.. they have like rubber pads. they have the felt thingys. i mean how do i actually use one. and i definitely don't want the rubber ones on top of my drums. NONO.

Well, rubber mutes simply sit ontop of your drums, so you hit on the rubber instead of the drums. Which is the same logic behind the cymbal rubber mutes, by the way.

Like I've mentioned, that's not going to happen.

The closest alternative to it would be mesh heads, in which you can tune them to tensions that feel like whatever drums they are (tighter for snare, much looser for floor tom, etc). But of course, mesh heads will still feel like mesh heads though.

Or... I don't know. It's going to take a real smart idea to come up with something that allows you to play on the drum heads without producing loud sounds. Stuffing drums with newspaper to its brim is just going to make it feel no better than your e-kit's pads.

i've already done it on the bass drum :) nothings gonna stop me!!! MORE NEWSPAPERS!!! nah i'm not gonna do that.

i've come to a final decision that i will only stuff the bass drum. i'll let the other drums sing and sing until neighbours come banging at my door.
and ya. even with all that bloody ton of crap in my bass drum. it doesn't change the feel. so. yup. totally non-e-kit at all.

Yeah, that sounds good too. Seeing how the feel from playing the bass drum is largely dependent on the pedal more than the tensioning of the head itself. And well, lower frequency sounds travel further, so I guess it's a good idea to not let your neighbours 5 floors below deal with the awesomeness of a birch bass drum.
